We had a marvelous experience with a great skipper at the helm. We saw lots of whale activity and it was a thrill to share this with my grandsons on our very first meeting last August, 2013. Looking forward to trying the Zodiac trip next time, get even more up close and personal!

Our whale watching experience with Captain Gary Stephenson was wonderful. With resident whales that stay in the area year round, the captain found whales within sight of the harbor. We spent our whole 90 minute tour watching the whales play. Captain Gary steered so the photographers could get the proper lighting in their pictures. Local stories and abundant knowledge were shared in a quiet unassuming manner. A favorite story of mine involved whales that came right up to his boat. I have to admit I thought it might be a "fish" story, until I heard other captains sharing this story as they followed us while Captain Gary found the whales repeatedly. He involved all of us in looking for whales and made us feel we had a share in the hunt. He pointed out the signs to look for and also gave credit when one of the guests spotted a spout. It was a fun and whale packed trip.

What a great experience! With whale watching excursions, you never know what you are going to get. We kept an eye on the weather and updated on the whale sightings before we booked the trip. The website says to call at least 5 days in advance, but we called the same day and they had an opening. The staff were very friendly. The captain of our Zodiac was Captain Gary and I think he had as much fun as we did, maybe more! He kept us right with the whales at several different locations along the immediate coast line. We were having so much fun, our trip lasted a little longer than the hour that we had booked, and that was ok with us! Definately book the zodiac if possible. It's smaller, holds less people, and is a lot of fun. Also, keep an eye on the weather and research whale sightings prior to going so that you don't waste your money on just a boat ride.

We had such a great experience - went out at just the right time (it was the noon trip) and got quite a show from the "local" whale. The Captain did a great job of keeping us in a good position for watching and being able to track him - most of the time I had completely lost track of him. Not a whole lot of amenities on the boat, so bring water or whatever else you'll need. The Captain was also pretty laid back about us blocking his sight line while we were gawking! I would just caution little kids - they have life jackets for them but there were a couple little ones on our cruise who were right on the railing, which was over their heads and didn't offer much of a barrier. And we were pitching and rolling out there - if you're susceptible, take seasickness precautions. It was one of the highlights of our trip to OR!

This was our second trip using Dockside Charters. We had a great time cod fishing and wanted to try chinook salmon. The crew (father/son) and boat were great, but I had to give it 4 stars because we didn't catch any chinook salmon, which was the point of the trip. We landed a few coho salmon, but couldn't keep them because coho fishing was closed. On the one hand, it's fishing so nothing is guaranteed. On the other hand, they are a guide service so they should be the experts on how to catch the target fish. I think the captain felt pretty badly, but not as badly as we did shelling out almost $500 and coming home empty handed. That said, we will go back as everyone working for Dockside is friendly and professional.
