Description: Our family business took shape when my great-grandfather, Joseph Czarnecki, opened Joe's Tavern in 1916 in Reading, Pennsylvania. His son, Joseph Jr., carried on the tradition, transforming the original tavern into Joe's Restaurant and changing the focus to fine dining and wine with wild mushrooms (a family passion) as the centerpiece. My father, Jack Czarnecki, followed in his father's footsteps, taking Joe's Restaurant to a new level while maintaining the mushroom theme. Despite the success of Joe's, our family's lifelong desire was to combine great mushroom hunting with fine wine. This dream was fully realized in 1996 when my parents, Jack & Heidi, purchased The Joel Palmer House and moved the family and the restaurant west. Our cooking revolves around wild mushrooms and truffles which we gather ourselves and with friends. We have always striven to obtain locally raised ingredients in our cooking, and we use many locally produced greens, herbs, and vegetables. Frequently we will use ingredients found in the cuisines of Mexico, China, Thailand, Poland, and India, so we call our cooking, “freestyle”. And, of course, we are working hard to create dishes which match the glorious wines of Oregon, especially Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay.

“The Drive is Worth It!”

Located about 45 minutes southwest of Dayton in Willamette Valley wine country, the Joel Palmer House is an exceptional dining experience. Everything from the setting (a restored Victorian home that is cozy, but also bright and warm) to the service to the presentation to the food and wine is a Wow Experience. Chef Christopher Czarnecki is a master with creative dishes and a deft touch from appetizer to main to dessert. Try the multi-course "all mushroom" menu. If you are a mushroom lover, you'll never have it better! The wine list is massive and and inspired.

“Destination restaurant in Willamette wine country”
Reviewed November 1, 2012

The Joel Palmer House is an upscale restaurant located in a historic home at the center of the northern Willamette Valley wine country. The atmosphere is a pleasant combination of elegant & relaxed. They have an expansive wine list with many local, high end pinot noirs at a reasonable price. Most appetizers and entrees contain mushrooms or truffles as a primary ingredient as this is the restaurant's signature theme. The service was first class and meals delicious. Attention to detail was evident throughout our dinner. The chef and owner, Christopher Czarnecki came out to our table to make sure that we enjoyed our meal and spent a few minutes chatting with us.
If you are celebrating an event or visiting the area and looking for a special night out Joel Palmer house is a top choice.

“Wonderful”
Reviewed October 23, 2012

We were fortunate to listen to this recommendation. The food was impeccable, the service helpful, friendly and elegant, the mushroom soup full of flavor, as was the stroganoff. Paired it with a fun bottle of local red appropriately called EIEIO. A wonderful evening overall.

“Amazing place!”
Reviewed October 17, 2012

We dine here during a 14 hour long power outage. When we arrived, the whole place was full of candles. In an old house like this, the atmosphere was amazing. The owner came out and explained that dinner would take a while with no power. It did, but the wait was worth it. The mushroom risotto was amazing, the soup of the day and the elk were beyond wonderful. The wait staff was very attentive throughout the whole evening. Highly recommend it!

“Excellent restaurant, but you must love mushrooms!”
Reviewed October 15, 2012

The ambiance is cozy yet elegant.
I wished I could order the tasting menu solo. My husband didn't want it and everyone had to order it.
