“Outdated and needs lots of attention”
Reviewed May 25, 2014

It is obvious this hotel was once a very fine destination (early 60s). We had a Travelzoo voucher ($119 for 2 nites + dinner for 2 + bottle of wine + breakfasts + free wine tasting at several local wineries). It was a good deal - but the hotel was a huge disappointment. They have 3 levels of rooms -- the original ones that are not nice (musty and dirty) . . . an upgrade which are larger units . . . and the newly renovated section which seemed nice (didn't see the interiors). The mgmt told us it is a $10 upgrade to get into either levels -- definitely a must do. Our first rooms (we had 2) were the lowest level - musty smelling and poorly cleaned. The gardens in the unremodeled area are unbelievably unkempt. The staff moved us (at no charge) to the intermediate level -- not musty smelling, and cleaner, but still very worn out. EXCEPT -- the beds were very good, and linens lovely. Lighting is horrible in both the bottom 2 levels. Couldn't begin to read for very long with such poor lighting. It's close to the freeway so very noisy.
Restaurant served good food and has a nice menu selection (dinner especially). Staff had it all together and were friendly. Breakfast was very nice; as good as any upscale hotel. The dining rooms are so poorly lit - made it not good for me, but if you like ambiance, I suppose the lighting promotes that. I always feel that a poorly lit restaurant is hiding lack of maintenance & cleaning . ..
Gardens are just so so -- they are massive and need a lot more attention than they are getting. It's sad to see a place so run down. Being so close to the freeway distracts from the garden ambiance. Given the same Travelzoo offer (which was an outstanding value) - we would not return.

Room Tip: Only select the newly remodeled rooms. Go elsewhere if newly remodeled rooms are not available.

Hi BonkyConk,
Thanks so much for staying with us and providing your feedback. We are glad to hear you enjoyed your Travelzoo deal, the restaurant, our staff and your bed and linens. We can assure you that we take cleanliness very seriously, and the lighting in our restaurant and lounge is only for ambiance, not lack of care and cleaning. The Village Green Resort is an older hotel and we are making plans to continue upgrades - we hope you will return to see the changes we make.

Our photography club had a field trip to the covered bridges in this area, and we stayed at the Village Green which turned out to be much more than a place to stay! The room was clean and well appointed, and we had a lovely secluded outdoor patio in the back where we enjoyed a glass of wine before dinner. Being photographers, we were thrilled with the extensive gardens throughout the resort. Check out the gazebo and the lovely moss-covered bicycle which adorns the month of May on the calendar I make for friends and family each year. The restaurant was great for breakfast and we also had a great dinner there. I'd go back again and again!

Room Tip: Ask for room away from freeway and with a small outdoor patio if you like.

Move this resort to a quiet area out of town and it would be better. The trucks and cars are roaring by at 75 mph 24/7. The gardens are on the edge of the freeway. Lots of beautiful flowers and trees but there is a lack of TLC for the gardens or for the rooms. The bath tub would be great if I were a midget. It was a 4-5 foot long tub that is not adequate for a 6 foot man. Motel 6 has towels that are as good as the ones here. The outside of the room needs a paint job and a real facelift. The room is a good size. The bed was great. The rug was clean. The heater was quiet. The staff was friendly and helpful. Walmart, Taco Bell and Subway are next door. The resort is very close to the off ramp to I-5. The occupancy was not high the nights we stayed and most seemed to leave after a one night stay. We probably will never return. P.S. This is the second time I have written this review. The Internet here is off and on. When it works it is fast. You get disconnected often as we found on two computers.

Room Tip: Stay as far from the freeway as possible. Tell the resort you do NOT want a yapping dog next door a...

The lobby was very cozy and very nicely decorated. the receptionist was very accomodating. we asked to move from our deluxe room to a standard room so we are close to our travel companion. i guess that is a bad idea. The bathroom is probably from the 60s or something. it is very outdated. it had one of those really old lotion dispenser which looks like a little water tower by the sink...never seen one of those oldies in my life. I felt like i was staying at a motel. the room is not 100% clean when we checked in. left over garbage from last visitor. the good thing is that the bed & pillows are comfy and not old. The carpet looks newer as well, at least not from the 60's. very dark in the bathroom and ventilation is super loud and not doing its work. Wifi is a joke. 90% not working in the room. 50% not working in the lobby. the breakfast is really under par. we only had toasts. the garden and the greens are very nice. Out of our surprise, the dinner at the restaurant there is superb. Very good prime rib and crab cake.

to summerize, i would not pay more than $75 to stay here.

had dinner package with deluxe room.
dinner excellent, although server was uninvolved.
older rooms. (we had stayed here in 1976 before Moonstone). NO LIGHT, very dark. wall sconces were inoperable. Fireplace was supposed to be run off of thermostat, but had a hidden switch. then pilot light went out, so we couldn't use the second day.
cleaning staff...not efficient...waste basket in living room remained full for 2 days. Continental breakfast mediocre. few choice...waffles, but batter subpar. No fresh fruit. No choice of yogurt (just a big bowl of unsweetend Greek yogurt) did have peeled boiled eggs. Cereal containers not filled. no pastry products..just bread.
grounds shabby. needs paint. Forgot to mention the nice gardens, but...on the way back, the path leads you by derelict building shells that reminded me of E. Berlin after WWII. Really a safety hazard...no barriers to keep kids from wandering through the area. NO INTERNET as promised. Staff not helpful...Supposed to be a log in network (described in guest materials)..but doesn't exist. 90% of time could not access internet...also very low signal...very frustrating. bath supplies marginal for a 'nice' inn...by the way the gardens have no color annuals as would be expected if actually maintained. Looks to me like Moonstone is on the edge of bankrupcy and so is spending as little as possible on properties. Oregon Gardens (also Moonstone) has steadily gone downhill the last few years....in summary..if you don't need internet, or a nice 'continental' breakfast, village green is not bad for a day or two....be sure to get the dinner package...the prime rib was excellent.
OHHHHH. I forgot, electric fixtures are not to code. NO GFI in bathroom area. No three pronged outlets available...unless you plugged in to the microwave/coffee maker outlet 15 feet away from desk......(had to plug computer into a power strip that already had 3-4 items plugged in, including the very small compact refridge.). I also noticed that it looked like the clean staff had not looked behind the dresser for a couple of week...filthy.

Room Tip: waffle batter is too thick, add a little milk and take out the waffle about 20-30 seconds early or i...

Gardens, gardens, everywhere and ambiance with a British flavor. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Village Green. Our room had some maintenance problems but overlooking those issues, the Village Green is delightful, warm, enchanting and many other positive adjectives. Our room was a pet friendly room and definitely not one of the premier rooms but it had a comfortable bed and a nice small enclosed garden patio. The entire property is in a constant state of improvement and it is showing its age. With that said, it is convenient and has a quality of classiness not found in high rise or newer hotels. The floor in the restaurant is particularly unique and eye-catching. The restaurant has very good food and is served by conscientious waiters who are willing and able to make your stay comfortable. Wine can be taken back to your room if you so desire. There is also a full service cocktail lounge that on the night we were there had live music entertainment. There were some local people from Cottage Grove there to enjoy the evening. The complimentary breakfast is served in the restaurant and is lavish itself with fresh preserves over yogurt, waffles, hard boiled eggs, muffins and juices, coffee, etc. We are looking forward to a return stay in the future. We would love to see the gardens in each season of the year. The price is a bargain when compared to the cookie cutter hotels that line the interstates.

As one of the string of Moonstone Properties, the Village Green does not disappoint providing a lovely garden area, friendly staff and comfortable accommodations. The gardens are a focal point of the Village Green experience. The garden was exquisite manicured and starting its move toward full bloom. The accommodations were clean and cared for. Despite a not-so-comfortable bed, the room we had was very nicely appointed and very clean, albeit a bit older and tired (tube tv). It came equipped with a refrigerator and lovely patio. The food in both the lounge and restaurant was very tasty, well prepared, reasonably priced and the wait staff friendly and helpful. We were greeted at check-in with a lovely booklet about Cottage Grove, coupons for wine-tasting and a friendly smile.

Room Tip: Book ahead for rooms farther from the freeway.
