My wife and I stopped at Rooster Rock State Park for a picnic lunch on our drive down the Columbia River Gorge during our visit to our daughter in Portland this past September. We parked on the west end and found a picnic table with a good view of the river. We had purchased sandwiches at St. Honore Bakery that morning and had bought some tribal smoked salmon at Hood River. There weren't many people at Rooster Rock that day and we had a pleasant picnic. It was only when I looked at the reviews on TripAdvisor recently that I discovered there is a nudist beach at the east end of the park. We didn't encounter any nude people on the coolish early autumn day that we visited Rooster Rock.

Clean, clear water, great swimming, feel awed by creation. Incredible rock formations, must see at sunset. Love the mud flats-we all had a ball.

What a nice beach! I like the ocean but this far north the Pacific is mighty cold! This beach has very safe swimming areas and the water temperatures are great! Yes, you have to walk a short distance to get to the island and yes there is some mud. But the walk is worth it and the mud kinda feels good squishing between your toes. This is definitely a great place to bring the whole family. All the people who we visited with were very friendly. Very clean. No trash!
Great place to skinny-dip and get the tans lines removed. ;-)
The only drawback is that on the west end you must wear a swim suit. :-(
I highly recommend Rooster Rock State Beach.

We hiked almost all the way around Sand Island. Crossed paths with around a dozen nude people. All very pleasant to chat with. We were nude, also. (The main reason for being on Sand Island.)
We were able to walk bare foot the entire time. The fine, soft sand and even the mud felt really good on the feet. There were no rocks in the swimming areas, either.
Very clean. We normally haul out lots of trash that others leave behind.
Very SAFE for beach-goers of all ages.
I suggest that you try the clothing optional section of the beach. You will no doubt find that naturists/nudists are very pleasant and friendly. They also clean up after themselves. BTW: The naturists/nudists self police the beach to keep the "pervs" out.

On my trip to oregon, i came through the gorge area and it was alright! Rooster rock just happened to be along the river so i stopped there and drove all the way down to the east end parking area. There were tons of cars, but not many people! We walked down into a kind of swampy area which wasn't what i would call a beach at all. Men with backpacks started passing us, all coming by themselves. As we walked more there was a nude old man up the path! Gross! Thats where all those men were going. It's a nude beach. We didn't learn it was a nude beach until we complained to the park ranger and they told us the east end was a nude beach. I learned the hard way! Just drive farther from Portland and you should avoid an incident like this!
