It's worth a stop for either the structure or the view alone, but here you get two-for one and at no charge. It doesn't take long to make this side trip and the spectacular views up and down the gorge are amazing.. One of the best views of the gorge is from this point. Check out the architecture of the building, too. A great stop.

The Crown Point / Vista House is one of several attractions marked by the brown signs along I-84. If you're like me, you zoomed on by the exit for about the first 37 years of your life because it was 30 minutes into your trip somewhere further, or you were 30 minutes from home and just wanted to be there.

Although it would be silly to visit it solely to see the park and house, it's worth stopping if you have the time and you're on your way somewhere else in The Gorge.

REASONS TO STOP:
* You are an octagon afficianado. Even if you aren't, how many 8-sided structures are you likely to visit in your life?

* You want a scenic view of the Mighty Columbia River. While Rowena Crest near The Dalles probably offers a better view, this is a lot closer to Portland.

* You always wondered what a restroom with marble partitions forming the stalls would look like.

*It offers a change of pace from looking at waterfalls, which you are probably doing if you're travelling along Historic Highway 30.

*You're cheap. It's free to look around.

WHY YOU'D ZOOM ON BY:
*You're made of styrofoam. Wind gusts are substantial and frequent. Although the park website touts picnicking, I get the sense there are few days all your food and dishes wouldn't instantly blow away.

*Your car and/or your passengers don't do well on narrow, twisty roads.

BOTTOM LINE:
If you have a day of activities planned in the Scenic Columbia River Gorge, it's worth including. It would be a good activity for out-of-town guests, provided they have a windbreaker.

I think these two locations often get confused!

We visited here during a very nice winter day. The views are amazing and fortunately the wind was very calm, as it can be extremely windy here at times.

The Vista House is curently closed due to remodeling until March 16th, 2012.
