We did Cape Arago as a day trip from where we were staying in Florence, and we had time to stop at the dunes near Florence also. I've seen most of the Oregon coast, and Cape Arago is one of the most dramatic sections, I think. There are helpful volunteers in the park who will help identify the animals you can spot from the viewing areas. Nice place to stop for a picnic lunch.

Perfect place to explore Oregon coast. Anyone can look at a beach anywhere, but this coastline is FANTASTIC.

Located at the end of Cape Arago Highway, this state park is easily reached from the Bandon or Coos Bay areas. Sunset Bay and Shore Acres are all very close and can be visited in a combined trip. There is a pull out to the right of the road where one can see a large number of seals and sea lions on rocks just a short distance away from the shore. Be sure to bring binoculars for better viewing. At the parking area at the very end of the highway there is a nice viewpoint with stunning vistas south. Trails down to the ocean allow access to tide pools. Quite worthwhile.

When we visited Simpson Reef in August there were some folks from an organization (I think they’re volunteers) with high-powered telescopes that we could use, allowing to see the seals and sea lions. It’s hard to imagine how many there were, all piled together.

Best tide pools ever! We love walking down to the rocky pools but very steep trail. Lots to see, just make sure you catch the pools at low tide.
