“Best. B&B. Ever.”
Reviewed August 3, 2008

When we pulled up to the Coos Bay Manor, we were a little skeptical considering the unusual location in the middle of an eclectic residential area. However, once we entered the house, our skepticism quickly disappeared. We are not huge B&B fans, especially of small ones, but this place was amazing. The hosts were super friendly and helpful, complete with two well-behaved dogs greeting us as we walked in. The room was spacious and pristine, with tasteful decor and an amazingly comfortable king-sized bed. The breakfast was delicious, and Felicia's recommendations for dinner and local sights were perfect. The only downside is that Coos Bay is not the most scenic community on the Oregon Coast, but even so, we would go back to stay at the Coos Bay Manor without hesitation.

This delightful B&B was an elegant trip to yesteryear in Coos Bay. My grandfather, an early resident of Coos Bay, lived just down the street for a time, so I was interested in experiencing the ambiance of the B&B. Our hosts were very accomodating. Breakfast was scrumptious. Our room was tastefully furnished. Jon accomodated our desire to remove the featherbed topper on our four poster bed. Felicia was a congenial hostess serving us breakfast on our second day. Jon is also an artist, and many of his watercolors are on display in the dining room and are for sale! We'd highly recommend the Coos Bay Manor.

Although the manor is a wonderful place, well decorated and home to the most incredible dog I have met, my partner and I still went away with the feeling we couldn't recommend it to friends. We just couldn't escape the sense that this was just a passing hobby for the host - something new to try out among a long list of other occupations and pre-occupations. One had the feeling that he was going through the actions, without really having his heart in it. Although that may have been because we were not golfers, fishers or other sportsmen. I somehow think if we were we would have faired better. All in all a bit of a disappointment. Our one saving grace was his best friend who dropped by on the day of our arrival and happily engaged in conversation with us giving us tips on where to eat, what to see etc... I feel sorry for having to write so harshly, perhaps we just hit a bad couple of days.

We stayed at the Coos Bay Manor for one night on a trip down the Oregon Coast. All in all, this is a nice property. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the inn is fairly attractive, and the hosts are reasonably nice.

The inn itself is a gorgeous historic building in the middle of a residential area just off the main drag of downtown Coos Bay. The living room has a plethora of historical information about the building through the 1800's and up, which is great for people so inclined to read through it all.

The living space is stocked with water, sodas, and wine in the evening. It's a lofty, bright area with big couches and a large upright piano. V. comfortable.

We stayed in the Baron room and were fairly pleased. The room itself is quite dark and had an 'authentic' musty antique feeling, but wasn't altogether unattractive. The pictures on the website are pretty accurate. The adjacent bathroom was a bit worn, with old countertops and one of those big soap/shampoo/conditioner dispensers stuck on the shower wall. I believe the TV in the room gets cable (didn't find the need to watch it much), and there's a big cabinet of videos/games for guests' use.

Venturing more than a mile or so away from the neighborhood lands you in what one of our fellow guests termed "the armpit of the Oregon coast." I had heard decent things about Coos Bay and found the neighborhoods industrial-looking and uninspiring.

Breakfast was surprisingly underwhelming. Blueberries topped with sugar followed by scrambled eggs. The food tasted fine, but was perhaps less than we expected. The hosts were nice enough to lay out trays of coffee in front of each room in the morning.

When we stayed there, the hosts had been running the inn for about 2 weeks. They were pretty good with dining/hiking suggestions and directions. Once they hit their stride, I bet it will be even better.

This is an amazing historic home, in the National Register of Historic Places. Lovely, historically faithful decor and extremely comfortable rooms. Check the website to choose your room. This was a rare case where the photos on the site actually didn't do justice to the lovely rooms, huge windows, and more...

There are Giant Redwoods on the property of this house. How many other B&B's can you say that about? It's in a nice, quiet residential neighborhood.

After several years in other hands, this B&B was just taken over by new owners several days before we arrived. They're very nice people, but they deserve a little more time to settle in before anyone comments on the breakfast. Free wine, sodas, beer, and more in the fridge for your enjoyment. Also, movies and games to borrow. Very nice place!

(Final note: the town of Coos Bay is not my favorite of the places we visited on the Oregon coast. But the restaurants were surprisingly good and this B&B is a gem. Works very well if you hop from Brookings to Coos Bay to Newport or thereabouts. )
