The scenery was lovely. The dining room had not even one window....very dull considering it was a beautiful morning. Had plumbing problems. Oh, and did I mention the trains? Large trains day and nite...on both sides of the river. Yes, a bit of a noise problem. Who knew? It sure isn't mentioned or shown on any website. Just OK for one nite.

There is no way that ANY hotel should be in this spot. The site (as we saw later, in the daylight) is about 75 yards from one of the most heavily traveled freight lines in the country: the BNSF lines that run through the Columbia River Gorge. HUGE freight trains roar through here all through the night.

You hear them coming miles away. Then they fade away, as the tracks are in some sort of "acoustic shadow." Then closer. Closer. Then, about a mile away, the ROAR begins. And it continues, as it roars past your room. And it keeps roaring, as these trains are 50, 75, 100, 150 cars long. It is horrible.

It would be tolerable, if the place was located in the city, or in a place you expected such crap. But the river is beautiful, and the scenery is great! So you cannot expect what's coming. But it does.

So if you're one of those rare people who can sleep through anything, this is your chance. Test yourself. But if not, DON'T stay here. You will not sleep, you will awake tired and pissed off. It's better to throw your money off the bridge. Or give it to the homeless. But don't waste it here if sleeping is at ALL important.

It's like sleeping in a metal drum in which a torturer bangs on the drum with a sledgehammer every hour or so. Basically the trains and this motel do the same thing that military interragators do when they engage in "sleep deprivation techniques." In other words, this is a torture chamber.

I came back to this hotel because I enjoy staying here. We stayed the last weekend in Sept. The staff were friendly, had good information about dining options, and check in and out was easy. We stayed in a room with a balcony and the beautiful view of the Columbia River. I would recommend the balcony. I enjoyed soaking up the last rays of the sun in the evening! The hotel in within walking distance of a few restaurants, which close pretty early. We like to walk down to the park where the Sternwheeler docks. Last year, we were there at the height of salmon season; very interesting to watch the fishing! We came up I-5 to 84 and then took the old Highway 30. Beautiful short walks to numerous waterfalls. The breakfast was okay, nothing special. Room was clean and comfortable, and it is above the railroad tracks. With the door and window open, it is noisy. Going to sleep with the AC on, we didn't need to use the ear plugs provided.

Room Tip: I recommend the rooms with the balcony

Make no mistake, this is just a Best Western. We're not talking a luxury chain. So, for upscale-economical, what makes it a great value is it's location, size and riverside balconies.

First, it's location is right on the Columbia Gorge with a view that's usually taken by that luxury chain. And even if you don't choose a riverside room, there is a nice hotel patio to take in the Gorge when the weather's good including benches and chairs scattered along the walkway between the hotel and the river to sit and ponder.

Secondly, the size is smaller for a chain hotel which means easy free parking and no schlepping of suitcases to your room at the very end of the farthest wing.

Lastly, not all economy chains even have windows that open for fresh air so I consider it a positive amenity that this hotel offer's riverside rooms with balconies and chairs at no extra charge if they're not already booked (just request it).

That said, it's still just a Best Western so I don't want to build it up too much.

Room Tip: Not all riverside rooms have the balcony so request it when you book it at no additional charge.

We were on the road traveling from Portland up through the Cascades and needed a place to stay. Chose this Best Western since it was a well known chain. It was wonderful to get all the ammenities of a good chain hotel, in a small town setting surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the great northwest. We had a river view room and what a beautiful view it was. We noticed that they supply ear plugs along with the toiletries which made us nervous, but didn't need them. Guess they were for when the trains pass below along the river. Would consider getting a room with a balcony if we ever returned. Although there was an area behind the hotel that had chairs and places to sit. We took our free breakfast and had it on the deck - the food was okay but the view was great! Also, there was a nice park you could walk to.

Room Tip: Definitely get a room with a view, or if you can with a balcony.

My husband and I stayed here three nights while on vacation. We had a room on the third floor with a view of the river and a balcony and felt it was worth the extra cost. The room was very clean and the front desk staff were efficient and courteous. The breakfast was the same each of the three mornings we ate there and it was fairly standard continental breakfast fare, The breakfast room is large enough to accomodate the guests. There are lovely seating areas behind the motel looking out over the riverand a restaurant is next door. There is a railroad track directly behind the motel. Being on the third floor, we were not really bothered by the frequent trains, but someone on the first floor might be. Earplugs were provided in our room.

Stayed here for two nights while touring the area. The room was clean and spacious, the pool was nice and the front desk was very helpful. Great view right on the River!
