Anyone who has traveled in the US with dogs knows that beach areas are usually extremely dog-unfriendly. In one town we visited in the Jersey Shore, not only were dogs not permitted on the beach, they were not permitted on the concrete sidewalk on the same side of the street as the beach, something I was advised of by a policeman patrolling the area for doggy scofflaws. Cannon Beach is a rare, rare exception and the Surfsand is a rare, rare piece of heaven right in the geographic center of that exception. The Surfsand treats dogs like royalty. Our room was equipped with a care package of extra towels for wet paws, dishes and treats. And the area of Cannon Beach in which the Surfsand is located is ground zero for doggy heaven. On our first day, we asked the front desk people to recommend an off-leash dog park. To our surprise, they told us to walk out the front door to the beach: Dogs are allowed to roam, leash-free, right in front of Haystack Rock, one of the most photographed and gorgeous features of the Oregon coast. We were shocked, then amazed and then proceeded to take full advantage. One of our dogs, who had only a month earlier had nearly died of bloat, galloped around on the sand like a puppy. Our other dog finally got a chance to dig (in the sand, not the backyard!) to her heart's content. The whole experience was so wonderful that we cancelled part of our road trip/vacation to stay two days longer at the Surfsand and paid a hefty fee (to the hotel that would have been the next stop on our trip and rightly so given the short notice) for doing so.
Here's a caveat: We were at the Surfsand during late September, which is the off-season. If you take your dogs here during the peak summer season, you might encounter crowds that will make you want to leash your dog voluntarily. Also, if you visit later in the fall or during the winter, you might encounter cold rain, wind, and, eventually, snow, which your dog will probably enjoy more than you. During the period we visited, it was sunny for at least part of the day with a high in the 70s.

For the humans: I have visited many beaches around the world and have lived in Florida where you are never more than a couple of hours from the ocean. Cannon Beach is, hands down, the most beautiful beach I have ever seen. And the Surfsand Resort is in the most beautiful part of Cannon Beach.Walk out your door here and you will see Haystack Rock, one of the most photographed features of the Oregon coast. Our room supposedly had an "obstructed view" of the Rock, but in my opinion, the view was complete. Every morning, I woke up with the Rock in my sight. Our balcony had a full-on view. If you are a jogger, you will probably appreciate the beach, which is a wide swathe of packed sand that is perfect for running. For bicycling, Hwy 101 is gorgeous. After one of my runs, I got the massage-from-heaven at the hotel spa. Although I'd booked an hour, I extended it because it was so good. Biking and running are easily accessible from Surfsand. no driving necessary. The Wayfarer restaurant at Surfsand (which also provides room service for the hotel) is really good, especially the super-fresh dungeness crab cocktail. The views from the restaurant are beautiful. The restaurant serves coffee from the Sleepy Monk, the local coffee spot across the street, where we had a delicious bacon-cheddar bagel. The only real disadvantage of this place was that I wanted to move here after about 24 hours and that obviously wasn't about to happen!

Room Tip: Don't pay extra for a full view if an "obstructed view" is an option.

My wife and I returned here after twenty years when we celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary here. This place is still just as beautiful as ever with magnificant views of Haystack rock and the pacific ocean. Gorgeous sunsets. Staff was extremely helpful with room location mixup. I thought we had a deck but we did not. Staff personally gave us a tour of available rooms and we choose two oceanfront rooms for two nights. What customer service! Wayfarer restaurant was excellent. Rooms clean and comfy. You can get lost just sitting on your deck and looking out at the ocean and volcanic rocks. Stay here and get lost. You won't regret it!

We visited Cannon Beach in early August and were thrilled to have stayed at Surfsand Resort. We were given a room that the front desk clerk referred to as the "employees choice" room - on the far side of the resort (i.e., furthest from Haystack Rock), but with no one above us or to the side of us. An unobstructed view of the ocean and down the coast made it well worth it.

I highly recommend taking advantage of the evening campfire on the beach, complete with s'mores supplies. The staff was quite nice to us, in fact, as campfires could only be started before 10:00 pm and we happened to be running late from an excursion down the coast. I called and they simply said, drive safely and we will take care of you when you can get here. It was a relief, as it was our last night at the resort and we wanted to have just one more campfire!
To sit and listen to the ocean, all bundled up, but cozy at the same time will always be associated with our Oregon trip.

The resort was far enough away from the actual bustle of Cannon Beach, that we didn't even realize how crowded it was until the day we departed. Having a restaurant right on the property (the Wayfarer) was a nice touch and there were a couple of little bakeries nearby, so we could have our takeout pastries on our porch overlooking the ocean.

All in all, just a delightful portion of our Oregon vacation. I highly recommend Surfsand!

Stayed at this wonderful resort 1 night for wedding in September 2012. Very friendly staff at check-in. Room was lovely, although next time I would probably choose a top-floor or upper-floor room -- I was on the lower level with a view of the ocean, but little privacy due to the patio/deck area being right outside the window. Great bath amenities, flat-panel TV, fireplace. Very romantic, would return again.

First time in Cannon Beach and we weren't too happy with having to pay top price for room but what a view - deck that looked out on beach and Haystack Rock - and the room was pretty good too. The room was nicely done even though not as large as described. The staff was wonderful; responded to all requests (and as former east coaster, we were used to people waiting for that tip - it didn't happen) and at the beach even suggesting that I might like a windbreak put since it was breezy. They set up chairs, umbrellas and windbreaks and provided towels. If there are children, there are toys and games for them. The Wayfarer Restaurant served a wonderful breakfast with fresh bread and jams. Dinner was very good too. In the evening bonfires are set up - you can have a private one for a nominal cost or join the group one. Very laid back and nice respite for us after a fairly busy week traveling from Tucson to Crater Lake, Portland and now Cannon Beach. We will definitely return if we are in vicinity again.

Room Tip: Ask for an Oceanfront room on upper floor - less children running about overhead and the view is priceless.
