This hotel was recommended by some friends who have enjoyed family vacations here for many years. It is south of most of Cannon Beach with easy access to the beach. Rooms facing the ocean have fantastic views of the iconic Haystack Rock. A restaurant, Mo's, is right there on the beach and was also recommended by our friends. The hotel grounds are well maintained and there is sufficient parking. We didn't know before we arrived that at least some of the rooms are actually studio apartments or condos; the hotel manages these for the owners. That explains the guest book, some of the wall art, and the full book shelves we found in our unit. We were pleased to have a moderately well equiped kitchen in our unit.
The only source of sun light and ventilation was the sliding glass door leading out to the balcony. The unit was frequently stuffy so we had to leave the glass door open. We also found we could get some cross ventilation if we opened the front door at the same time. Our unit did not have air conditioning, ceiling fan, or other built in ventilation system. We didn't use the gas fireplace, but noted even with just the pilot light it was putting out some heat--really not needed on the warm days we were there. The bed was a Murphy Bed that tipped up into the wall during the day. It wasn't the best hotel mattress I've used, but certainly is a step above a sofa bed mattress.
Just a comment about the reception staff. Usually the front desk had two staff, but one seemed to be constantly on the phone, so a line formed in the lobby waiting to be served. I suggest having more staff available and perhaps having the phone calls taken in the office.
This is a family friendly place and dog friendly, too. It wasn't unusual to hear kids playing or parents calling to their children. Some other reviewers have mentioned "thin walls" but we were not bothered by that.
We enjoyed our stay, think we had good value for our money, and would consider staying at the Tolovana Inn again. We would probably bring more breakfast and lunch supplies next time.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view and perhaps a room on the end of the building that has some additional windows...

We were pleasantly surprised by our nice studio room we paid extra for the ocean front but it was worth it. Very nice kitchen and supplies. We slept on the murphy bed and it was fine. I got to hear the ocean all night. They really offer alot as far as pool, bbq and spots on the beach for fire pits. We usually go to Lincoln City but the beach in Cannon Beach is a better walking beach. The office staff was wonderful and we will go back............

Room Tip: we stayed in 324 ocean front studio

For $190 a night, I think there should have been a bit more…The staff is friendly but check in is at 4:00 which is pretty late in the day. The ground floor room of building 2 has a view of Mo’s parking lot and the rooms are not air-conditioned so you can’t leave your sliding glass door opened to get fresh air or hear the ocean. They have only shampoo (conditioning shampoo according to the bottle) but no actual conditioner. The blankets are not double-sheeted which should be standard at this room price. I was able to change rooms during my visit and although I was able to leave the door open, the bed pulled out from the wall and again, simple bedding…a sheet and blanket. The bedding was clean but the pillows smelled like they needed to be washed. The remodeled rooms were done on a budget and if you look closely, done poorly. The rooms that have not been remodeled are very old and outdated. You can hear voices clearly coming from the other rooms as the walls are very thin. Also if you do book a room, call them directly don’t use their web services so you can ask about specific rooms, views, remodels etc. This would be a fine hotel for about $125 a night; $630 for three nights was too much!

Room Tip: Call the hotel directly and ask about rooms, views and remodels.

Thank you for your recent review. I wanted to address several of concerns for your benefit as well as others who may read your review. Yes, check-in time is 4:00. This is pretty much a standard, especially for large hotels (we have 177 rooms to service) in our peak season. If guests arrive early, we encourage them to check at the desk to let us know they’re here and if their room is ready, we’re happy to check them in early. The ground floor rooms in building 2 do look towards Mo’s. They also have views of the ocean and Haystack Rock to the north. It’s rare that we have hot days on the coast, hence the reason most hotels do not have air conditioning. Mother Nature generally takes care of that with the ocean breeze and an open door or window. I was sorry to hear you didn’t find our remodeled rooms up to your standard. We certainly take great pride in the work done, the materials used are high quality (granite, tile, carpeting, cabinetry, furnishings, etc…), and the vast majority of our guests find them to be very comfortable. We have just nine rooms to complete so when calling, please ask for a remodeled room. Chances are, we’ll have one available for you. Our pricing is very competitive for the coast during peak season and certainly Cannon Beach. For a renovated oceanview suite with a fireplace, full kitchen, private balcony, and a property that includes an indoor pool, spa, sauna, fitness center, game room, and oceanfront access, $190 is quite reasonable.

Thank you-

Our family has had the opportunity to stay at Tolovana 4 times. It is a great place to relax and make unforgettable memories with your family. The property is peaceful and the majestic ocean welcomes you at the balcony.

Nice room, great view. This is the second time we've stayed at Tolovana. It's the view that brings us back. Had family get together, rented 3 rooms. The same thing happened this time as last. When we arrived a couple hours early the front desk refused to see if any of our rooms were ready. We sat in the waiting room until they finally would let people in their rooms at 4:00. By that time the line was 10-12 deep and not enough help to get everyone registered. Front desk attitude was "snippy". Rooms were nice except dishwasher leaked all over the floor. Maintenance never did show up. Super view though!

Room Tip: Get an ocean front or ocean view room.

We keep returning to Tolovana! Our extended family finds this to be a wonderful gathering place - the children especially enjoy the indoor pool. The service is excellent and the view of Haystack rock is enjoyed by all. Mo's restaurant is handy and has a million-dollar view. The clam chowder is good too!

We stayed over the 4th of July weekend and had a great time! Our room was very spacious (#103), kitchen area was wonderful, our ocean view was limited since we were on the ground floor. The third or even second floor would have been a better choice. The Murphy bed was very uncomfortable, therefore I would not recommend it. The shower pressure could have been better as well as the bathroom towels.
We had difficulty with our TV but someone came very quickly to help.
The location is great and the staff were wonderful!
We will definitely stay again but we will be a little more particular next time with our room selection. Would have given a 5 star recommendation but deducted for Murphy bed, shower and view.
