“Try the other surf shop in Cannon Beach...”
Review of Cannon Beach Surf

Cannon Beach Surf
Reviewed August 2, 2010

I stopped into check out some suits for my young daughters (both <8) as well as a possible new board. We were met with an air of indifference and left to fend for ourselves; all the while two people held up the counter while engaging with a local and the third (owner possibly) paced around a bit looking surly, only grunting an answer to the question:

"Do you have any other youth wet suits?"

"No."

End of discussion.

Needless to say my quest for a board was stalled as I was less than stoked to proceed with a shop that didn't really appear to be interested in my business. The "No Pop-out" concept is pretty cool, but the pretentious attitude is a total turn-off. I would much rather patronize a shop that might sell pop-outs as well as customs and treats all customers with respect regardless of skill than a shop that has a bad attitude and does not invest time into those new to the sport. I would be embarrassed to take my friends who are learning to surf in here or suggest they visit here based on how they might be greeted.

KDGordo-

I am sorry to hear about your poor experience at my shop in Cannon Beach. We have been fortunate to experience a great summer here on the North Oregon Coast and perhaps from time to time we get a little too busy in the shop. I appreciate your comments and will use them while further training my knowledgeable staff in customer service and professionalism.

It is my mission at Cannon Beach Surf to provide excellent service, quality American made products and to avoid the attitude I've experienced through the years of surfing. I invite you to stop back in and give us another shot next time you are in Cannon Beach. Please ask for me, Mark Mekenas when you do or give me a ring at the shop if you have any questions or comments: 503-436-0475.

Thank you for stopping in and helping us to refine our customer service! I look forward to meeting you and your family!

Sincerely,
Mark Mekenas

We had some good experiences renting boards early and really enjoyed surfing with their foam boards. The owner was very nice to us and made us feel welcome.
However, on our last attempt we were treated with far less respect by his staff members. We were verbally attacked after some poor communication between the smug staff members. The majority of shop's revenue comes from renting very cheap foam boards to amateurs. The staff shows little sympathy to assisting newcomers and providing them with any advice. This is poor business savvy.

Being in our mid-30s, we decided to try surfing to see if we really are officially too old to try new things. Turns out, we're not! We called Cannon Beach Surf to arrange lessons, and were told that they offer semi-private lessons, meaning that you have one instructor for no more than three students. My partner and I both signed up for a lesson, and we ended up being the only two students. We had a lovely instructor (Paloma) who had just graduated from high school, but was a great teacher: a great combination of solid factual instruction, effective trouble-shooting, and solid encouragement. She worked with us for about 2.5 hours, and we were exhausted, but had gotten very close to actually standing on the board, and inspired to get in better shape so that we could do better the next time. The gear provided seemed adequate to us (especially as complete beginners) and the instruction was solid. I look forward to going back to learning more!!
