“Serene”

A nice place to visit. Very serene and comfortable. A bit expensive but a great get away. Picnic or stay either is great.

“We Love the Metolius & Camp Sherman!”
Reviewed March 26, 2013

This is a most unique and beautiful area anytime of year. We go in winter to see the snow, in fall to enjoy the quiet and hike, in spring & summer to hike, fish, camp. It is still unspoiled. The Camp Sherman Store is a must see!

“Amazing”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

The river can be viewed at its emergence. It flows out of the ground. Origin is not known. Believed to be from the Cascades several miles away. The setting along the entire river is pristine, with minimal human impact. Mostly used for sight seeing and or catch and release fly fishing.

“A River So Blue”
Reviewed March 2, 2013

A visit to the Metolius is always enjoyable, whether you are Fly Fishing, hiking, camping or photographing all the natural beauty. This river is born full grown straight out of the ground, a truly amazing thing to see at the headwaters where the river appears out of a small hillside. I don't think anyone really knows where all that water comes from, but I know I have been at the headwaters in the fall when the Kokanee spawn and seen the fish swimming right into the hill!! The color of this super chilly river is spectacular, a vivid kind of blue that reminds me of ice. This river never warms up, even in the August heat due to the fact that it comes from underground. Only the heartiest of people would ever consider jumping into this river, but occasionally I have been known to!

Some wonderful highlights are the coming of the butterflies in spring, Swallowtail, Checkerspot and many other species can be found in large numbers here. Also, giant Osprey nests are abundant in the high Ponderosa tree tops, and they are always fun to watch soaring overhead. Also, in the spring, this area flushes with Bolete and Morel Mushrooms, but they can be tough to find if you don't know where to look. Fish viewing is a popular thing to do here, at the bridge in Camp Sherman and at the Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery one can see big Trout and Kokanee. At the hatchery you can feed the fish, a fun experience for all ages, but children especially enjoy that. Of course there are numerous wildflowers in Spring and Early Summer also, most notable I think is the Tiger Lily.

Camp grounds are abundant all along this river, and there are also several small resorts with cabins. Most of the camping has a fee, although there are a few free spots, but they are not right by the river. There is an old dirt road that follows the river all the way to Lake Billy Chinook. The road is closed to motor vehicles, but hikers and mountain bikers are free to follow the river the 12 or so miles down.

Go to the headwates of the Metolius. Beautiful setting and worth seeing the river appear from under the rocks.
