The Metolius House is a beautiful lodge nestled atop a gorge overlooking the Metolius River and scenic pasture land, with Mount Jefferson and Three Fingered Jack as a viewing bonus. Wow! The service is great, the food is too. The beds are comfortable, and the bathrooms are new. We highly recommend it.

Room Tip: They all face the great view.

Do I tell everyone how wonderful this place is or do I keep it a wonderful secret? I guess I tell everyone in the hopes that it won't fill up and become more expensive by the time my husband and I want to come back. The truth is we didn't want to leave. Who knew that so beautiful a mid century house and grounds would be set down so far off the beaten path? We stayed in room #1. I saw three of the 7 rooms and they appeared to be roughly the same though some have fire places and some do not. They are fairly roomy with queen beds and bathrooms that sport the original 50s plumbing fixtures. Quality soaps and shampoos are provided. The room is NOT made up every day of your stay but towels are refreshed. We like that arrangement. We did not see any of the cabins, except from the outside, while walking the meadow trails. The house is low slung and designed with lots of glass and open beams. There is a beautiful terrace with lots of places to sit and gaze at the beautiful Metolius river below in a meadow complete with cows and Mt. Jefferson in the distance. We took full advantage of this area, spending one whole day of our three days there doing nothing more than reading and looking. We had a minor problem with plumbing in our room and it was checked immediately and fixed that morning. The staff, especially Melissa and Carlos, were always open and caring. We had dinner one night, prepared by Chef Robert and it was memorable. We ate out on the beautiful veranda with three other dinner guests (two of which had spent their honeymoon in one of the cabins 59 years ago). The lodge was actually once a family home (the owners of Jantsen Mills) and feels very much like visiting a friend's home even today. If I had one suggestion to make it would be to vary the breakfasts. They make their own fabulous pastries for the continental breakfast, but it was the same every morning. A little variety, even if it was to bake scones or muffins some mornings, would have been a welcome break. This was our favorite stop on a three week road trip. We will make every effort to visit again.

Room Tip: The rooms seemed to be quite similar - some have wood burning fire places. We were in room #1 which is next to the veranda. One night there were people sitting out there and talking until late. With the windows open (there is no air conditioning) we could hear every word. Since the rooms are slung out in a row, a room farther down the corridor might be quieter.

House of the Metolius is among the top 3 inns where we have ever stayed. The ambiance of the lodge is just wonderful; despite a recent renovation it has maintained a vintage feel. The beauty and tranquility of the setting is unsurpassed; we were even treated to a chorus of coyotes howling one night (a personal favorite)! Our group of 6 stayed for 3 nights last week and could not have been more pleased. A special request for coffee in the lodge room was handled with the utmost graciousness. Every employee with whom we came in contact was willing to go above and beyond to make us comfortable. Carlos, in particular, was kind and helpful in every instance. The most notable thing for all of us was that the staff's attitude in wanting to help ALWAYS seemed genuine, as though we were members of their family. No sense of fawning over paying guests but rather a sincere wish to assure we were completely comfortable. A truly lovely place to stay.

My partner and I stayed here for two summer nights and we really did not want to leave! The hosts, Jade and Loy, were kind and welcoming. Our room in the main lodge was spacious, tastefully decorated, and spotlessly clean, with a stunning view of the tree-rimmed meadow and the Metolius River, backed by the snow-covered peak of Mt. Jefferson. We could easily have spent several days at the property alone, walking the meadow trails, relaxing on the lovely patio, reading books from the excellent library, and enjoying the beautifully appointed common spaces of the lodge. And dinner was delicious!

Dear "mew" - It was great to hear from you and see that you enjoyed your stay with us. We remember your visit and how you both seemed to relax and rejuvenate while you were here. We're also glad to hear that Chef Robert's preparations were to your liking and we'll be sure to let him know. We hope you'll plan your next visit with us....maybe in the fall...and that we'll see you again soon.

I don't really know how to rate this place. The setting is beyond gorgeous. Just a few cabins. Lush lawns. Incredible views. The river running right through it. You could not ask for a more beautiful spot. The hosts are friendly and helpful. The cabin was spotless. The setting was totally quiet.

On the downside, the cabin we had (Gorge) was quite old. The beds were comfortable enough, but the thing that looked like a King was 2 twins pushed together. Lighting was dim and the sitting area was a couch and a window seat - not real comfortable.

The river is pretty to look at. As I understand it, fishing is poor.

There are other cabins and lodge rooms. At least one of the cabins was huge and new. It looked great. We didn't see the lodge rooms. The common area in the lodge was beautiful.

Room Tip: I think the key is to recognize that the older cabins are, well, older. If a peaceful, beautiful setting is the most important thing, any of them would be fine.

Hello FamilyTripper:

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your recent visit. We're glad that you enjoyed the natural beauty which surrounds us here at House on Metolius. We also appreciate your candor in commenting on the age of the cabins. It is true that our cabins have been around for a long time, but we do try to keep them clean and comfortable for our guests. However, they are not as modern as some other resorts might be and your observations will help us in the future if we decide to update them.

Many of our guests like the quaint and homey style which they have and say that they feel as if they are enjoying a cabin from bygone years which they recall as children, so the old style does work for some of our other guests.

I chuckled at your note about the fishing being poor. As an angler myself, I always know that the "fishing" is great but the "catching" is definitely a challenge. With the Metolius being a spring-fed river that runs crystal clear, the fish definitely have the advantage and can see us coming so they are wiley critters, making the attempt to catch them an adventure!

We're glad that you enjoyed visiting the Main Lodge and noted that the common areas are beautiful. The guest rooms were updated about a year ago and you may find them more to your liking on your next visit to our area.

Thanks again for your notes to us and we wish you all the best in your future travels.
