Riverhouse on the Deschutes
Ranked #11 of 44 Hotels in Bend
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 13, 2013

We had a comfortable stay here. Wish we had been able to get a room with view of river but we arrived late in the evening. The beds were very comfortable, room clean and the breakfast a step above most breakfast buffets (real oatmeal, fresh melon, French toast). Breakfast on deck was very pleasant. The hotel is a little older but the furnishings and grounds are well maintained. It's a drive in to downtown Bend, which may be an inconvenience for some.

We stopped in here for just one overnight, and wish that we had more time to spend. I saw in other reviews some people complaining about the decor, but we found it to be just fine. I certainly didn't feel like we were in a time-warp or anything. The rooms were a good size, with comfortable beds, and little patios. When we come back, we will probably pay the extra money to have a room overlooking the river. They throw in two free welcome drinks in their bar, and include a hot breakfast, which are great perks. And, there is no fee for pets. The only issue for me would be that it's not quite an easy walking distance to downtown Bend. For those that want to enjoy the breweries, you'd need a DD, or do a 2.5 mile walk.

We stayed at The Riverhouse on our way to a family vacation. I initially chose this hotel because of the location (because we would be towing our ski boat downtown would be awkward to navigate) First off; the staff was incredibly polite and helpful (both ladies at the front desk were busy as we arrived but took the time to acknowledge our presence and greet us) We had a room down on the river with a fireplace and 2 person Jacuzzi. The room was extremely clean and well appointed (Keep in mind this is a hotel designed to fit in with the natural settings around it.) We ate dinner at the Crossings restaurant where we sampled so awesome local beer ate some wonderful food and really enjoyed the ambiance. After talking to my husband I realized that the Riverhouse has been in Bend for quite some time. But the hotel doesn't feel old. It feels like you are in a really nice cabin in the mountains! Because our room faced the river we left our balcony door open and listened to the river all night! In the morning we took advantage of the breakfast buffet which was great! The food was pretty standard breakfast stuff except for a large selection of fresh fruit! Don't miss out in it! It was wonderful! We will be returning to the Riverhouse again!

Room Tip: I would definitely pay extra to have a river side room!

This motel was our first impression of Bend, and I must say it wasn't a good one. We wanted to stay in the Oxford downtown, but could not get 2 rooms. If you don't care about style or location and just need a room, this may be your motel. On the up side, the room was HUGE, and in fact, we did not even utilize all of the space. (We booked the family suite w/ the spiral stairs--- try getting your luggage up those!) I think most of the positive reviews that I read about this place were from paid employees and not real guests. The pillows are lumpy and the towels were from the 1970's, just like the decor (and not in a fun retro way!). The patio overlooking the river had cheap plastic chairs and cobwebs galore. The smell of the entire place was of ammonia or urine, or both. The only reason I gave it 2 stars and not one was because I didn't see any dirt, bugs, or anything else that would warrant the lowest possible score.

The breakfast was great for my kids, but my husband and I chose to eat elsewhere. They provided quite possibly the WORST COFFEE on the planet. It tasted like an old metallic coffepot. They did provide a large assortment of fresh fruit, oatmeal, eggs, bacon, waffles and cold cereals. To say something positive: The fruit was good!

I hate being so negative, but after staying at the Hotel Monaco in Portland for 4 days and then another nice hotel on the coast, coming to this hotel/motel was a complete and utter disappointment.

Many thanks for being a guest of The Riverhouse and for offering us your feedback and business. We're happy to hear that the room size and children's breakfast were to your liking, and we apologize for your frustrations from there. Our Hotel is a "Mature" Family run business for over 40 years, and it certainly does not appeal to all. The Hotel recently completed a carpet renovation for all guest rooms, including bedding upgrades in our Spa Suites. Our Hotel sits directly on the Deschutes River, and in fact, "the river runs through it" describes the property perfectly. We have also been told that it's a Pet's Paradise, and that we are highly accommodating to 4-legged members of families. We certainly apologies for not meeting your expectations, and I will share your positive comments with our housekeeping staff. If your travels bring you back to Bend, I hope that your next visit is a more enjoyable one. Thanks again for your time and review.

Overall good but expect to pay a little more. Prime rib was best ever. Room was adequate. River view was nice. Service in restaurant was excellent. Check in was quick. Pool was great for kids. Did I mention the prime rib was excellent.

Must say that in general Bend was pricey. Too much traffic and poor parking. This hotel was no exception. Large property that was well maintained but dated. Quiet, clean room. Stairs to multi floors. Would probably have felt better if we weren't paying premium prices.

This was a beautiful room with a spa, fireplace and view . Slept extremely well, was very quiet and serene. In the morning I opened the sliding glass door to hear the river running outside my room. Could not have been a better atmosphere and great getaway..a must stay if you are coming to Bend.

Room Tip: As for a King room with a Fireplace and spa!
