THE Original Pancake House in Portland was started by Les Highet and he was. Short that is. But only in stature. Quite the task master. And this guy was a giant in figuring out a breakfast formula that could be duplicated without the typical plummeting of quality. Both the Bend and Redmond locations are owned by the same couple and they do a fine job of abiding by Les's long held standards. Clean, bright, friendly and fast (except for the apple pancake). The coffee is ordinary but hey that is what Les wanted. If you are brave the Apple Pancake is a spectacular mass of goo and sweet. It is the ultimate sugar and cinnamon rush. The Dutch Baby (what the Apple is built upon) is the standard by which others are compared to. I prefer the Swedish but frankly you can't go wrong with any of the pancake offerings. At the original my college roomie used to always get pigs in a blanket and a dutch with a side of eggs. I however have been going to TOPH since the '70's and have never had anything but pancakes.
If you've never been to one you should do Portland's but these are worthy of the famous institution.
