7:30 reservation on a Friday. Seated within about 10 minutes. Dishes came slow, but waiter offered complementary dessert in response. Dish prices a little high but the quality was very good. Have been here before and will return.

“Somewhat overrated-- at least at lunch”
Reviewed February 17, 2012

Looking for a romantic, nice getaway for Valentine's Day lunch, we went to the Pine Tavern in Bend. It's in a beautiful spot with a nice view of Mirror Pond, and the interior-- at least up front in the bar area, and in the middle dining room area-- has a nice ambiance. But we were seated in the rear dining area. The only thing to recommend that spot is the wonderfully peaceful view of the river; otherwise, it's kind of run-down and tacky. In the middle of the room, there is a huge lodgepole pine growing up through the roof. It's supposed to be a 'draw', but all you can see is the bark from inside, and it's not a big deal really. It looks better from a distance.

The service was competent, if a bit lackluster, when we arrived for a late lunch. My wife ordered the cream of mushroom soup and a caesar salad; I opted for their reuben sandwich served with fries. The mushroom soup was by far the best thing we had. It was delicate, creamy, and had the perfect level of savoriness. My wife found the caesar salad acceptable, but nothing to rave about. My reuben was so-so: tasted fine, but the corned beef was tough and the sandwich had only one thin slice of meat on it. The marbled rye bread was good but saturated with oil from the griddle when they grilled it. All in all, it was only passable. But by far the worst thing was the fries. Now, I usually eat pretty healthy, so when I do indulge in french fries, I want them to be amazing. These were the opposite. Lukewarm, limp, and lackluster. I almost sent them back, but I just can't bring myself to do that. It was like they plated some leftover fries first and then started on the sandwich-- really, it was that apparent they weren't fresh. The least they could have done was tossed them back in the fryer for a minute while they poured the oil over the reuben on the grill!

It may be that the Pine Tavern shines at dinner-- I hope so, at the prices (lunch was quite reasonable, but their dinners are somewhat expensive). It certainly is in a beautiful spot, but they definitely need to update or remodel their Pine Tree room overlooking Mirror Pond. And, they need to send their chef next door to the Bend Brewing Co. to learn how to do a reuben properly-- they have by far the best reuben I've ever enjoyed.

“A Taste of Historic Bend”
Reviewed February 9, 2012

If you want an unhurried, charming, casually elegant atmosphere this your spot. The service is always good, the food good but not over-the-top great, prices reasonable. Ask for a table in the diningroom overlooking Mirror Pond.
