Well, let me say the the Ameritel Inn does itself a great disservice by using such a pedestrian name. When I first stumbled across it, I pictured your run of the mill chain hotel (especially with that name), but we were pleasantly surprised.

ROOM:

PROS: Huge. One of the largest rooms we've stayed in (short of a suite). There was so much extra space, that with a minimal amount of furniture movement, they could easily fit in a couch and coffee table and still have more than enough room to spare. I hope they take advantage of this space in their next upgrade. It was also clean. The only hint of disrepair was some bits of rubbish in the AC/heating unit, but that was minor. Had a mini fridge and the vanity area was actually WITHIN THE BATHROOM!!! Hooray!!!! No problems with the early riser disturbing the late sleeper while getting ready. It had maybe the most comfortable push chair I've sat in in a hotel room (along with a nice ottoman footstool).

CONS: They should at least put a small table next to that chair. It's so comfortable, you're going to be sitting in it watching TV or reading, and it would be nice to have something to put your drink or snack on. The room we had also featured a small balcony. However BEWARE of that first step!! When leaving your room to get onto the balcony, you have at least an 8 inch step down. Both my wife and I tripped the first couple times we went out onto the balcony. You just don't expect that type of step down. These are minor issues though. The room was great.

VIEW: Try to get a room on the west side and on the third floor (that would be the highest floor). You will overlook the Old Mill Shopping District as the Ameritel is actually built on a bluff overlooking the area. The Deshutes river is just beyond that, and off in the distance are the 3-Sisters mountains. There is one downside though, and that would be the afternoon sun (which is quite bright in Bend), so you'll need to have the curtains closed during that time. But the view is worth it.

LOBBY: Very impressive. It's huge (just like their rooms). It's actually designed to have a very rustic feel, almost like a wilderness lodge (well, I guess Bend is technically in the "wilderness" of Oregon, so maybe it fits). Huge fireplace and lots of sitting area with plush chairs and sofas. The dining area is also in the lobby area. Many seats. The continental breakfast was also quite good. Cookies are laid out at the front desk at night. The outside of the hotel is also very nice. It definitely has some character to the look.

INTERNET ACCESS: Available for free in their business center area.

STAFF: Very friendly and helpful.

LOCATION: Great. Just off the main drag for easy access to anywhere, but far enough away from it that you have no issues with noise or traffic. The Old Mill Shopping area below is very convenient for shopping and getting something to eat. You can also walk along the Deshutes river just on the other side of the Old Mill area.

In summary, we can see why this hotel is ranked number 1 in Bend.

If you don't like noise and indifferent service, don't stay here. The Ameritel is a new hotel built in the south of Bend, a town that is expanding rapidly (while there were just 25,000 inhabitants in 1994, that number is now more than 75,000). The service was chilly throughout and the staff treated every request as if it were a huge imposition. They looked askance at us when we asked them to book us a cab. They were not at all apologetic when their card-burning machine gave me faulty hotel key cards three times in a row. They gave us the wrong information about the laundry service.

The room was reasonably clean, although I did find a large black raisin by the side of my bed. The air conditioning system was cheap and incredibly loud, so you could either bake in silence or lie there at 2 am listening to an engine roaring. There was an unidentifiable vibration from the bathroom (not the fan - I turned it off) and to cap things off, the fridge was an old one that chugged into life every hour or so. At 6.45 am on our last day, a work crew appeared under our window and turned on a generator to power their tools as they did something to the large mall just to the north of the hotel. The staff didn't seem at all bothered.

Bend desperately needs new hotel rooms to cope with the influx of visitors. It's a shame this place is so shoddy.

This was one of the best hotels we stayed in on our recent trip to Oregon. From the moment we checked in i couldn't fault anything. I would recommend this hotel to everyone. The location was great with many shops and restaurants just a short walk away.

Thank you Trip Advisor. With a name like Ameritel with thought this might be a low-end joint, but definitely NOT. They need to change their name to sound less pedestrian and reflect the quality they deliver.

Location is terrific. It's right on the river where you can walk or float to the cutesy old town, and a staircase away from the stores in the mill district. The mill district has been converted to a large outdoor shopping mall with topnotch shops including REI. We are outdoorsy people, but believe me we appreciated all the shopping, movie theatre etc. It's also just a short drive to Fred Meyer and other stores.

It's also just a short drive to Pilot Butte, a fantastic 45 minute hike up to 360 degree views of the whole region. We did it in the morning and in the evening to watch the sunset.

Now to the hotel. Check in was a breeze. Very friendly. The reception, lobby and eating area is massive and beautifully decorated in modern/classic decor with large fire place. it's huge and intimate at the same time. The pool and fitness room are both on this level and they are both outstanding and large. Hot whirlpool too.

We had been on a 3-week road trip at this point and this hotel was most welcome. Hot cookies every day at 5. Hot coffee, tea all the time.

We paid the AAA rate of $129 per night. This included a really nice breakfast. Above and beyond the usual fare. Fresh fruit, cottage cheese, waffles, lots of cereals, hot eggs, sausage, potatoes. Nothing wrapped in plastic. Lots of breads to toast, fresh muffins (yum), All very nice and healthier than the usual.

Our room was the largest we had been in all trip. Plenty of room around the 2 queen beds, micro, fridge, desk, (good internet). The only wierd thing about the place was the low lighting. Very minor relative to the extra comforts.

Classical music piped in the elevators and yet the place didn't feel stuffy at all. Lots of family travellers, business travellers and a cool band were staying there (The Peppers).

The place was spotless and the bathroom was large with a shower/bath.

I can't imagine staying anywhere else in Bend. This was topnotch value.

What a fantastic hotel! First of all upon check-in, we recieved fresh baked choco-chip cookies. Delicious! And then the receptionist upgraded us to a Executive King Spa room since it had two beds, and the room we had booked did not. The room was amazing! Two floors, with the two beds and bathroom on the bottom floor and the jacuzzi tub on the top floor. Very sweet! For dinner, there are many choices. You can walk down the paved path to the Old Mill District shopping mall center, which is adjacent to the Ameritel, and get a bite to eat. Or you can do what we did, and took a mile walk through historical downtown Bend to a nice Italian restaurant. Very nice town, especially the Old Mill District. The exercise room has many aerobic machines along with some free weights and machines. The free breakfast was one the best we've ever seen. Eggs, potatoes, sausage, yogurt, juices, cereal, waffles, pastries, bagels, muffins. Could sit and eat there all day, but held back! If you are staying in Bend, there is no other possible option than staying at this Ameritel. Very impressed.

Nice Hotel near the river and downtown. The only feedback i can give is the lack of info about tourist destinations and local attractions. We asked the front desk a couple of questions and did not get much information.

My husband and I stayed here with my parents on our way back from Crater Lake and had a wonderful overnight stay. Our room was very nice and clean, comfortable beds, and we never heard any noise from outside or outside guests. If you love pillows, you may want to ask for additional pillows since there are only two per bed. The location was excellent in the Old Mill District (5 minutes from downtown) and there's a walkway from the Ameritel Inn down to the shops and restaurants along the Deschutes River. This was very convenient as we were all tired from our drive and just walked down for dinner. We highly recommend Greg's Grill for dinner! Excellent staff, great service, yummy food! We would certainly stay at Ameritel Inn again and recommend it to anyone staying in Bend.
