Famous Photographer Ray Atkenson loved Sparks Lake most of all, he photographed the heck out of this lake, and swam, cavorted and stomped all over the lake. I visit this lake all summer with my Shepherds, it is so shallow in the northern sections that you can just walk in it on a nice hot day, picking pieces of waterlogged wood out of the mud to throw to the pack of dogs, splashing about, a Micro beer in hand, staying cool on a hot August day! They lake is awesome, kayakers and canoeist abound, Sandhill Cranes and Bald Eagles spend the summer, Boat in camping, (no motors) is a great pursuit, and the view is of the Sisters and Broken Top, and Mt Bachelor Too!

My husband and I retired, moved to Bend, Oregon, and decided to become flat water kayakers. We've enjoyed paddling on the local rivers and the Cascade Lakes and our favorite is Sparks Lake. Trying to describe the natural beauty is a challenge! The waters are clean and you can observe fish swimming under your kayak. When you look up, you see several of the Cascade mountains - It feels as though you could actually touch Broken Top! There are lots of nooks to explore. with places to dock your boat, climb ashore and eat your lunch. We have not yet done this, but we always notice folks who are camping in primitive sites that line the lake. There are also several hiking trails to enjoy, one that is short and easy enough for almost everyone and another that is easy, but a longer distance. It is no wonder the photographer Ray Atkeson considered this lake one of the most beautiful places he had ever visited. I promise you will not be disappointed if you visit Sparks Lake!

This hike was perfect for my almost 5 year old and her friend. There are places to stop and play in the water (or at least sit by it) and the rock formations are really neat. You also get a great view of the mountains.
