A nice leisurely (about 40 minute) ride from McEwen station to Sumpter. All volunteers on the train were friendly and full of good information. The schedule is helpful when you want to spend a bit of time in Sumpter getting ice cream at the Scoop and Steamer or going to tour the dredge and learn to pan for gold, then catch the train back to McEwen. We went on an off weekend but according to a Sumpter resident there are train "hold-ups" where they stage a mock train robbery with horses and gun-slingers and all. There are the options for open air cars as well as covered cars. This is a steam engine and there is ash and debris that falls so if you don't want to get hit go for the close top car. The whistle might be too loud for babies and very small children. I would definitely recommend this for people heading through Sumpter.

We recently took a ride on the Sumpter Valley Railway and had a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The railway is located about 33 miles southwest of Baker City and runs between the (almost) ghost town of Sumpter and the former town of McEwen. Several other ghost towns are a short distance from Sumpter.

The railroad runs on weekends from June through September with special excursions at other times. Trips are either one way (about 6 miles and 30 minutes) or round trip, with both open and closed cars. The railway operates original, refurbished cars and engines that were used by the actual railway before it shut down in the 1940's.

In the closed car our conductor gave an interesting and factual history of the original railroad and how the volunteers located the cars and engines and acquired track to rebuild part of the railway.

The railway is entirely volunteer operated, is run in a very professional and friendly manner and cars and engine were in great condition.

This is a great activity for families and for people with an interest in railroads or northwest history. The ride is very reasonably priced and there are tourist facilities at both ends of the railway.

Check their web site for trip schedules and excellent information about the railway and the town of Sumpter.
