Owner description: The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center offers living history demonstrations, interpretive programs, exhibits, multi-media presentations, special events, and more than four miles of interpretive trails. We offer a variety of interpretive programs and special exhibits year-round. One mile of well-preserved ruts lie on the Interpretive Center grounds, and are accessible by the trails or from a turnout on Highway 86 about a half-mile west of the Center's entrance.

After a 20 year hiaturs, we visited the Baker City, OR national historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center. Just missed the Labor Day weekend re-enactment camp of trail wagons, although we did "visit" with a few of the stagglers. It's a great center and we're glad to be back.

We urge visitors to the area to take the time to visit this wonderful Interpretive Center. It is just about 5 miles from Baker City and is a side trip well worth taking. The displays paint a vey realistic picture of what settlers had to endure to a survive the journey West. The more displays you see, the more amazed you become and you wonder how they made it at all (and many did not). It is a great educational experience for young and old alike. Our mistake was not budgeting enough time to enjoy the displays and trails adequately. To get the most out of the exhibits, videos and trails you should to plan several hours, but if you cannot it is still worth the visit. Truth be told, this should be a destination trip rather than a side trip. There is a nice picnic area to utilize before or after enjoying what the center has to offer so you can make a day of it.

This was a very interesting and pleasant visit. We didn't know a lot about the Oregon Trail but when we left we felt we had learnt a huge amount. I would highly recommend this.

Outstanding presentation. Living history presentation was excellent. I am happy my tax dollars support this important part of our country's history.
