What can be said when it's Cracker Barrel? We had friendly service despite it being quite busy. My only disappointment was with the chicken and dumplings...where's the chicken?

We've been to a lot of Cracker Barrels (because they're always good) so when we got to Tulsa late for a family reunion, about 10 of us decided to get a late dinner at the one there. I was surprised that the service was slow and the food left something to be desired. My wife got the spicy catfish and it was so hot she couldn't eat much of it. Way too much pepper. Another member of our group had it as we'll and the level of spice was more balanced but the thicker part of the fillets wasn't cooked completely. I ordered scrambled eggs and what I got was more of an omelette. And getting a refill on my Diet Coke was way too difficult.

I have to add that we went back the next day with a different group for lunch (not my choice) and things were better. The green beans were excellent and the turnip greens were good. The grilled chicken strips had a good flavor. And I appreciate that Cracker Barrel has quite a few healthy choices.

Maybe the first time we ate there was a fluke but it was my first less than excellent experience at a Cracker Barrel and I think the management needs to take a look at the consistency of their quality.

I've never been personally bowled over by the faux, schmaltzy country charm of Cracker Barrel. All of the nostalgia of the general store, Americana theme seems like something out of a paint-by-numbers Thomas Kinkade painting.

So far as the food goes, it's pretty decent, not great or over-the-top, but simple American comfort food. If you love starch and all things covered in some kind of gravy (and who doesn't?), than this is your place.

I had a hamburger steak, fries and green beans. The steak itself was tasty, albeit dry and the green beans were, well, green beans. They did bring out complimentary rolls, which were good. All in all it was a satisfactory meal, with all the ambiance of being trapped in an episode of The Waltons.

I chose this restaurant (we were in Shawnee, OK at the time) because it had been years since I went to one and so many brag about how great they are. I thought I'd give it another chance and I was tired of McDonald's and the other drive-thru chains.

My overall experience was decent and it's certainly one of the more non-threatening restaurants you can go to. Who knows? Maybe I'll go back in another decade or so.
