This museum is one of Tulsa's best places to visit. They change the collections so you can visit it often.

“Tulsa's premier art museum”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Tulsans consider the Gilcrease Museum one of the jewels of this City. The collection of the art of the western U.S. is unparalleled -- Remington, Russell, and many others. The setting of the museum in the Osage hills is exquisite, but the museum's collection is what is really outstanding. Tulsans visit this museum and treasure it.

“Excellent Museum for Art of the American West”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

This is an excellent facility for viewing art of the American West by artists such as Catlin, Remington, Russell, and Moran. The canvases range from "regular" size (8x10 or 11x14) to huge (fills the wall). There are several benches in a gallery to allow you to sit and examine the pictures. Also, there are several bronzes in the collection.

If you enjoy the old west, this is the place to see the American West captured by the artist. The pictures provide a good representation of the Old West. To fully enjoy the pictures, I would allow at least 3 hours minimum and more if you sit and study the paintings.

I first visited Gilcrease as a child and was in awe of the paintings. This awe and wonder continues each time I visit. The museum might be out of the way to visit but the effort to visit is well rewarded.

“The best museum of Western Art”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

The museum houses the collection of Thomas Gilcrease, a Native American oilman, who acquired an enormous trove of paintings, drawings, documents and artifacts of the American West. We've visited most of the Western Art museums in this country and nothing really compares with Gilcrease in terms of the scope and depth of its holdings. Now managed by the University of Tulsa, the museum devotes many resources to educational programs spotlighting the collections. Make sure that you join a docent-led tour and you'll not only learn about the art but also the history of the American West. Much of the art holds real interest for kids as well, so bring them along.

“Love history, love art, love Gilcrease!”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

The museum is filled with interesting art. I love that in each room they have included items children can touch! Plus, they have a room set up for children that reflects their current exhibit. There maybe art projects for the kids and when the George Washington exhibit was there the kids could have their picture taken next to a life size George!
