Positives: great burgers, excellent service, lots of parking
Negative: out of the way location
Boomerang was once a frequent stop for us. We enjoyed the food, the atmosphere, and the value. Somewhere along the way we stopped eating there in favor of other, often more specialized, restaurants.
A recent return visit revealed our absence was a mistake! Our food was very good, service was excellent, and prices were very reasonable... In many ways, Boomerang is just as it used to be.
This restaurant is located in a strip shopping center on the southeast corner of SW 89th and Western. It's tucked behind a row of free-standing buildings. While not completely obscured, there are enough other types of business in front to deflect a driver's attention.
Look closely...you won't want to miss it!
Because it's located in a shopping complex, you'll find plenty of parking. You may not find a spot directly in front but you shouldn't have to walk far!
Outside, this restaurant has looked basically the same many years. The surrounding shopping center recently received a substantial facelift, but only a few exterior details have changed at Boomerang.
The interior is a different story. Gone are the phones used to order meals from each table. The self-service drink counter has been converted for use by waitstaff. Customers no longer retrieve meals and pay bills at the main counter. (These changes may have been made a long time ago...like I said, we've not visited in a long time!)
Decorations still have a funky retro vibe, but there are fewer and larger pieces. What remains is less cluttered and is focused on musicians and celebrities. I didn't see any of the past references to sports.
MENU AND FOOD:
Food selections remained basically unchanged from our last visit. The menu lists a nice assortment of sandwiches, burgers, salads, and other casual foods. Although I've never tried them, several family members recommend their chicken tenders. In case you're interested, Boomerang offers an "all-you-can-eat tenders" special every Monday.
Although I'm a big fan of Theta burgers, my wife and I ordered two "old-fashioned" burgers ...prepared different ways....during our recent visit. Both were very good. In fact, mine was the best "old-fashioned" I've had in many years.
My wife substituted onion rings for seasoned fries. Both fries and rings were crispy and tasty but a bit on the greasy side.
The switch from self-service to full-service was the biggest change we noticed. I always enjoyed the novelty of ordering on a telephone from the table. But it was nice to have food delivered and drinks filled by someone else.
Our server was prompt, extremely attentive and courteous. She brought extra napkins without being asked...a level of attention missing from most casual diners.
This Boomerang is one of the best restaurants on the "89th Street" corridor. It's also an excellent example of a business that's "hidden in plain sight." We pass this location almost every day, yet have conveniently ignored it. Not any more! Following this "rediscovery", we'll be back, and soon.
