“Nice but no spa”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2011

As you all might know I like my spa. This hotel was clean and the room was nice. But I like my spa. I would stay only if I couldn't find something with a spa.

My family (4 and 5 yo) and I stayed at this hotel for one night. The staff is extremely helpful and will get what you need whenever you need it! The room was pretty nice, nothing too special.

This hotel and staff are a 5 star hotel in a 2-3 star class! My family and I are part of a traveling baseball team and have stayed in many, many hotels. NONE of the other hotels in this area can compare with this, and it's not just a lucky one timer. We stay at this locale every other weekend in fall and spring ball season. The whole staff welcomes us, cares about our needs and goes above and beyond any expectations, and has so from the very first stay. They treat us and our pets like family. Example: the dryer jammed and we needed a uniform dry quickly, staff member Shaine put it in their industrial dryer for us! Try and get help like that at bigtime hotels, it's unheardof.... Their breakfast is great and their attitude is better.....try them out, you'll love the experience as much as we do. Also, the hotel room layout is excellent for short or longterm stays, very large and well apportioned rooms, very comfortable!!!

Nice & clean. Beds not very comfy. Pull out sofa miserable. A/C unit was way loud. Didn't sleep well. However it was a less expensive place to stay so for the price I guess it was ok.

Had a very nice hotel clerk named Shane, he was very friendly and very talkative ! The room was great , was very clean. thought it might be noisey because there was a lot of kids staying there, but it was very quiet at night. Was very convenient to downtown Oklahoma City. We had a king suite, it had a nice kitchenette, a great desk area to do work, and a great flat screen tv !

A strictly bare-bones lodging experience with bare-bones amenities; sparsely furnished rooms; inexpensive and downmarket furniture.

Here is what the website for the chain says, with my comments in context:

Relax in spacious, attractively appointed suites...
COMMENT: the suites are not suites at all, but long, narrow rooms with a mid-point wall that juts out between the cheap sofa/chair and the tightly confined bed area. They are not attractive, but bare-bones. Everything looks cheap. The hotel building must have also been constructed on the cheap, because you can even hear toilets flushing in adjacent rooms, TVs blaring, and regular-toned voices.

that are larger than traditional hotel rooms...
COMMENT: False. Once we saw the place, we quickly made reservations elsewhere, after spending a night there. The hotel to which we transferred was a traditional hotel, and the single room there was larger than this hotel's tight, tiny suite.

where you can enjoy the luxury of plush mattresses, crisp linens, custom duvets, and soft pillows....
COMMENT: This conjures up an image of a deluxe hotel with superb linens and bedding. This was not the case at all.

Whip up your own meals in the kitchenette if you wish and mingle at the Wednesday night reception featuring complimentary food, adult beverages and soft drinks. Start your day off right at the Hawthorn Suites with our complimentary hot buffet breakfast and complimentary newspaper.
COMMENT: The breakfast too is barebones, served on tiny styrofoam dinnerware, with plastic flatware. Tables were not wiped after a diner's use; once you located a table, you had to wipe it clear of food debris and other what-have-you.

Worst of all was an outburst by the evening manager directed to a guest in the lobby. The guest (not me or anyone in my party) shifted a lobby easy-chair to watch television, and then tried to turn the TV up. The night manager, in a loud and piercing voice, LOUDLY berated the guest, turned the TV off with the remove he apparently had at the desk, and demanded that the guest put the chair back before he'd agree to turn back on the TV. A colleague joined him behind the desk, and to this colleague the rude clerk (very) audibly called the guest an "idiot." I have never seen this type of non-guest-first shocking rudeness in any hotel I've stayed in. I was appalled.

Hygiene appeared slap-dash. There is no work-out facility worthy of the name. Just a few old machines grouped in a converted conference room.

It fronts on the freeway. Overlooks from rooms in the front of the hotel are onto the freeway (about 300 feet away) and a Toyota dealership.

The whole experience was dreadful.

Dear Sir,

We are very sorry that you encountered so many problems during your stay with us. We strive to make each guests' stay a pleasant experience. We are proud of our all -
suites hotel with oversized rooms and our hot buffet breakfast with over 32 items served. We are held to a high standard by our brand and perhaps the reviews can attest to that. However, we hope that we are not judged entirely by one agent who did not practice good customer service.

Please accept our sincere apologies and if ever in the area we would be honored if you would try us again.

Best Regards,

Maryann Sextro

My husband and I spent one night here on our recent vacation, and could not have been happier or more comfortable. We arrived late but had a very speedy, pleasant check in and were greeted with a large, comfortable, very nicely appointed room. Access from the feeder road was a little bit akward as we were not familiar with the area, but we have zero complaints about the hotel itself. Breakfast was fresh with both hot and cold choices including plenty of fresh fruit, eggs, and yogurt.
