Western Hills Guest Ranch

My husband's family recently held their bi-annual family reunion here which they've done for many many years now. This was my first time to visit and I was a little worried as I have pretty high standards when I go out of town. The hotel room was comfortable (nice AC!) and the Wi-Fi was great even though we were far from the lobby (a must for my husband!). We did have a scary spider in the room but it was exterminated quickly and we went about our merry way. The camp grounds are really beautiful with the huge lake pretty much occupying 75% of the parks circumference. We weren't able to get into the lake due to some bacteria concerns (pretty common in such hot weather) but the hotel pool was a great alternative. There was shady spots to relax and the pool was nice and large to accommodate all the children everywhere. They also had a splash pad which several of the people in our group enjoyed. I only tried the dining area once, which I was told was overpriced. The food was decent, basically what you would expect from a small lodge cafeteria/buffet. The year after next we will have dogs with us, so we will likely choose one of the cabin options... They looked very comfortable and spacious while also rustic and fun. They don't have Wi-FI in them though, so it will have to be a non-working trip. Oh, and I almost forgot, make sure to try out the horseback rides while you are there! The shaded trail is at least a mile long, if not more, through twists and turns. Everyone in our group thoroughly enjoyed it and all the horses were mild mannered and handled well with beginners!

Room Tip: Book cabins early! They fill fast. Wifi is available only in the hotel rooms.

Our decision was last minute to get a cottage at Western Hills. We already had reservations for a cabana room later in the week and planned to head out a few days early to enjoy the lake, golf, and nature trails. Our original plan included camping, but with highs at 105 and lows only in the lower 80s, we looked for other accomodations. We had 4 adults and one child age 6 in our party. Fortunately we were able to get a cottage and couldn't have been more pleased. The price of the cottage for 3 nights was very affordable. Also housekeeping is very effecient. They were at our cottage by noon each day.

We stayed in cottage 331, which looked like it had been redone within the last month. It was a one bedroom cottage. The bedroom had 2 twin beds and plenty of room for all the luggage for our party. The living room had a queen sleeper sofa and two larger chairs, along with a mini fridge, microwave, and a round table with seating for 4. There were 2 AC units, one in the bedroom and one in the living room. Our cottage had a hillside view, but we still had a great view of the lake. Parking is right outside your door. There is a grill provided and it was a quick walk to the lodge to take advantage of the wonderful swimming pool, or to check out the Rec Room. The restaurant in the lodge was okay(resonably priced), but the pizza place in town (they do deliver to the lodge) was great!!

We took our boat and kept it at Paradise Cove Marina. This was a very nice marina without the normal price mark ups you find. Fuel was only 20 cents more a gallon as opposed to other marinas use that mark it up $1.50 a gallon. There was no price difference noticed on the food and drink at the marina. It's nice not having to go back to town and pick up your days food and drinks for the lake!

We have already made reservations for 2 return trips!

Room Tip: The bathroom only has a shower, which could be an issue if you had small children.

Western Hills is a lodge with various options (cottages, hotel rooms and suites, bungalows) located in a scenic state park in Oklahoma. Definitely a terrific value -- nice rooms, fabulous rates (only $85/night on a holiday weekend for a cottage), and lots to do, with a full pool, an activities center and a location on a large lake. I stayed in a cottage room, and I was very pleased. The bath was recently renovated, with stone tiles covering both the floor and the walls, as well as the room floors. Wooden blinds covered the windows nicely, managing to keep out most of the strong morning sun. The TV was an old analog-style, but the lodge is in the process of updating its rooms with HDTVs. (And really, with the cable, it was fine.) The bed, a queen, had a very firm mattress that turned out to be surprisingly easy to sleep on. The linens were pretty much "standard motel style" -- full bedspread, only two pillows on a queen bed, etc., but very clean. Staffers were friendly, professional and extremely helpful (including helping us when we accidentally locked ourselves out of our room more than once!). If you're one of those "four-star-only, please" folks, you probably won't care for the rustic style of this lodge, but everyone else will enjoy it. A great place for a weekend (or longer!) escape on the lake!
