“Great way to spend a weekend”

Cowan Lake State Park
Ranked #1 of 14 things to do in Wilmington
Attraction details

One of many great state parks in Ohio. Located just outside the quaint town of Wilmington, this is a perfect place to get away for a couple of days
We got back late last night. We left then because the weather radar showed a line of storms moving in and it is no fun packing up a campsite and pop-up camper in the rain.

The store/restaurant
friendly people, as with all state parks quality stuff for sale. They also had an ice cream and pizza shop. We did not try any pizza since four of the five employees quit their jobs a few hours before, but the aroma was great. There is a great outdoor seating on the backside over looking the lake through some woods. They sell most of the camping stuff to if you forgot to pack

The campsite
great place, well laid out. There are bathrooms, and water close to all sites. The showers are not as close, but easily accessible. The entire campground is wooded, but the majority of sites allow for awning. unfortunately, ours did not. the trees were too close to the asphalt parking pad - no big deal.
The bathrooms are clean. Not elegant but clean. This is a green campground so you need to take care of your own trash

The lake
Great lake. the boat ramp is easily accessible and not too steep. The one finger by the ramp has one end that is full of lily pads - pretty cool. Our beach was okay. It has a lot of little rocks and not as much sand, but easily walked upon. the parking is elevated so be prepared to walk up a hill.
The lake is good size and is 10hp limit, perfect for us and our kayaks. We spend about six hours paddling around before we went in because the sunblock was wearing off. and we saw about 2/3 of the lake. There is also a little island in the lake. We did float for a bit and watched some sail boat races.

Quick Facts
buy wood from the little house just outside the park entrance $5.00 bundle and it is always dry
book in advance, the best sites go early
be sure you have all the proper licenses etc. - the park is regularly patrolled by rangers.
keep smartphone with you to check the weather radar, nothing worse that packing in the rain
store your food high or inside - a lot of raccoons, and they are not afraid of people

My son's family in Columbus, and my daughter's family in Cincinnati - this was a great place for a Day Fishing/Picnic Trip. If you want everyone to caught something (especially kids), this is the place to go. It has a beach area, camping area, cabins, marina, fishing, wild life. We got there just as the sun was coming up, and saw deer, hawks, cranes like birds, etc. The kids loved it and the big Water Lillies. We had a beautiful day with blue sky and lots of sail boats, row boats, and others on the Lake it was a very nice view. Where we were, there was no walking trail, but we walked along the Lake.

We love going to Cowan Lake SP for camping, the campgrounds have nice sites, with many of them having shady trees. This is an older park so it's not like camping in in some of the newer Parks that have had all the trees removed and lack imagination for making camping a more outdoorsy experience. The lake is also nice, limited power on the motor boats, a lot of people take their small sail boats, pontoons, to this lake. We take our kayaks, from the dock at the GIANT lily pads! There's also a store/commissary where you can buy snacks, food, ice cream, charcoal, ice, etc which makes it nice if you forgot the hot dog buns. Hiking is nice too. Too make of the camp sites allow dogs, I like dogs, but don't want them barking or staring at me when I'm eating. The beach is awful - the sand is very coarse and too make rocks. I guess you can't have it all in an Ohio State Park with the limited funding they get from the State.

We stayed in one of the cabins. They were basic but cozy. Basic dishes were provided but soap, paper towels, and baking dishes were not, so bring those. Very pretty.

I've stayed in a few state park cottages in Ohio. The basic cottages here are comparable to a deluxe cottage elsewhere. Very clean and cozy. Central air/heat. 2 bdrms - 1 queen, 2 twin and a fold out bed. Linens and towels were soft. Cottages have screened in porch and grill. Flat screen LCD TV on wall. Will absolutely be back!
