Now, who would have thought that a sushi restaurant in a strip mall in West Chester, Ohio would have provided one of the best sushi experiences ever? Certainly not us. Sushi Monk doesn't have big city ambiance, but it certainly has big city choices. The last time we had a live scallop prepared as sushi, it was in Japan. So, that was impressive. I was expecting it to come with all the "stuff" surrounding the central scallop meat but, instead, it was thinly sliced with and interl-ayered with slivers of lemon (and would have been improved with even smaller lemon slivers), served on half of the scallop shell. On the other half was a sauce made of the rest of the scallop, minced and mixed with tempura flakes and chili/sriracha sauce. Crazy good. The iced tea was green tea (and delicious, though not what some may expect - but tasted with an open mind, you'll probably find it enjoyable). The sushi rolls were wonderful and they have something for everyone, cooked and raw. One of our dinner companions had never has sushi but enjoyed trying small bites of even some of the raw offerings (including sashimi). The sashimi offerings were limited but so fresh and good that none of us minded. I can't eat white rice and had hoped to have some rolls made with cucumber (naruto) instead - but they were out of whole cucumber. So, that was my only disappointment but, when it's something that's not on the menu, I can't fault them in the least for not being able to provide it. They also had a lovely, light white wine that purported to have been made just for sushi and, although it was a bit watery, it was indeed delicious with the sushi so you may want to give that a try as well. All in all, if you want great sushi and aren't attached to having a fancy restaurant atmosphere, you can't go wrong with Sushi Monk.
