“A lovely stay”
Reviewed June 1, 2007

This is a lovely property in the center of "town". The Der Dutchman Restaurant in right next door and there are several shops to easilty walk to (the newest is a P Graham Dunn Gallery).

Liked: Staff, snacks and coffee in lobby, size of room, having a porch with rocking chairs, nonsmoking in the whole inn, breakfast, cost, convenient parking

Disliked: the hard bed - if you prefer a softer mattress, this could be a problem

We have stayed in Amish County (Holmes County) at least 10 times and have enjoyed ourselves each time. This weekend was another great weekend getaway for us.

I picked this hotel after reading about it on trip advisor and I was not disappointed. we were on a road trip around Ohio and travelled from Ireland, so not knowing the area we were very apprehensive of the hotels we picked but What can I say about a hotel set in such a fantastic location? As soon as we walked in the quality of this hotel hit you with its Victorian décor. We had a double room on the ground floor, which was well laid out and very clean. The ladies have a separate area to do their make up from the bathroom, which also has a separate sink. There is a fridge in the room also. There were double doors that led out to a veranda, which had two rocking chairs. A perfect place to sit back and watch the world go by.
Breakfast is taken on the first floor in the mornings with plenty of food for a light start.
You can get a buggy ride with the Amish right outside the door of the hotel and costs $5 each. Tickets are obtained at the hotel reception.
200 yards up the road is the “Der Dutchman restaurant” with serves fabulous food. If you like desserts try the banana cream pie. Heaven.
There are only 5-6 shops in the village to speak of and a bakery, which is attached to the restaurant.
This place is great for getting away from everything and relaxing. Leave the kids at home and enjoy the peacefulness of the area. There are not to many places like this.

  • Liked — Location, decor, clean, views
  • Disliked — After 8pm there is not much to do as everything closes.
  • Tips/Secrets — If you have a teenager. there is a crazy golf/baseball centre just past Sugar creek. It's something to do after 8pm but it only stays open until 10pm. Go into Sugar creek and take a right at the lights. It is about 6-7 miles on that road.

We originally booked our stay at the Carlisle in Sugar Creek but when we decided to arrive a day earlier there were no rooms available and we were directed to their other inn in Walnut Creek. When we checked in we were very impressed with the staff on duty who were very friendly and efficient. We were also amazed at the building itself, which was built by the local Amish and Mennonite craftsmen who are expert woodworkers. The rooms are enormous and beautifully decorated and furnished.
The Inn is set on a hill and the view of the surrounding hills and valleys with their patchwork of Amish farms and fields is serene and beautiful. Our room had a balcony with chairs and a table and we sat there for quite some time taking in the tranqulity. We enjoyed the area very much. There is a lot to see within a ten mile radius and many interesting shops to explore, especially the furniture shops which are stocked with the excellent products of the local craftsmen. I highly recommend both the Carlisle Inn and the Ohio Amish country for a relaxing long weekend.
