It is a quaint little restaurant that serves great bar-b -que!! Generous portions! Their side dishes are very good also! Prices are reasonable.

“Awesome smoked B-B-Q”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 14, 2012

Since becoming employee owned and operated late last year the food has become even better and that is saying something because it was already very good.

I love to eat here and the value is great. The pork(my favorite) is smoked to perfection and when served is almost totally devoid of any fat. They offer either seasoned fries or hand cut fresh(I recommend these) and homemade cole slaw. The soups are nicely flavored and delicious. I want to recommend the bread pudding for dessert that is served with a hot buttered syrup and whip cream. Oh my gosh.........fabulous.

They also can cater and we have personally used them for this.

A great restaurant in a small city and worth visiting.

Not much on atmosphere but good food. Service sometimes slower than most but worth the wait.

“Worth the drive for smoked BBQ”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 12, 2011

On the Grand Army of the Republic Highway, otherwise known as U.S. Route 6, there's a place tucked away on the side of a rise between quaint downtown Vermilion and the western outskirts of Lorain. We've stopped here occasionally over the years, and my husband & I have decided to share this gem with others.
The Pit, also known as Joe's Pit B-B-Q, is an unpretentious restaurant serving mostly locally-sourced meats, wood-smoked for 14 hours. Smoked brisket, and pulled pork are our favorites, and we managed to make it in just before closing on a Sunday evening and get the last two all-you-can-eat pulled pork specials.
The Pit's pulled pork is tender chopped pork, with a nice amount of crispy-crunchy edge bits and nearly no fatty pieces. Served with your choice of barbeque sauce - we're fans of the hickory barbeque sauce, which is sweet yet tangy with a slight bite of pepper, and sides of cole slaw and baked beans, the staff will keep bring more out until there's none left or you're too full - and not just plate after plate of mounded meat, but additional sides, too. For under $10 a plate, even the most ravenous carnivore can be satisfied.
The baked beans deserve a special notice. Baked with tender tiny chunks of leftover smoked brisket, the beans deliver little bursts of unexpected smoky meat flavor in every mouthful.
Since the meat is served with sauce on top (or on the side, by request), everyone can dress their dinner to suit their own taste. There's also standard diner-type foods, for those who don't want BBQ, like chicken fingers and burgers.
The ambiance is roadside diner crossed with country cute, evident especially in the restrooms, which are surprisingly clean, well kept, and decorated in country shabby chic.
Th Pit B-B-Q is the perfect end to a day of driving along the lake, and being just 20 minutes from the west side of Cleveland, it's worth the drive to just
