“Call before you go or you will be disappointed”
Reviewed November 5, 2008

We went to the Kalahari on Nov 3 since Nov 4 (Tuesday) the kids didnt have school. We expected low crowds. Well, the place was packed and like the other reviewers have stated, HALF the water park is closed at any one time. If I had known this I would not have booked. Obviously their lack of employees is an ongoing problem. They said they did not anticipate the crowd. Well they can refuse admission to day trippers to limit the people. There were no less than 5 buses of kids there. The food service closed 1 hour before park closing also even though they were supposed to stay open until closing. Since half the park was closed there were long lines everywhere and wall to wall people in the wave pool. If you go, you should call to see if they are "rotating" attraction openings. It does not work and it is very dissapointing.

This was my 4th time at Kalahari. We took my neice who had never been there before but we were disappointed at the lack of water park attractions open. We arrived on a Saturday and were told that the hotel was sold out, yet almost 1/2 of the rides and attractions were closed! The same thing the next day (Sunday). I don't think I will be back unless they can guarantee that most of the attractions will be open.

  • Liked — The breakfast buffet is very good. Staff were friendly. Cleanliness.
  • Disliked — Half of water park was not open.

This is an exceptional property - and huge! My husband and I are wrapping up a 3 day stay at the resort and I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the facility. I think I expected a property that was focused on family entertainment but average or less on things like quality of rooms or restaurant offerings. That was not at all the case.

Our room (just a basic 2 bed with balcony) was exceptionally clean, the beds were very comfortable and the room included a small refrigerator and microwave for convenience. The balcony was a nice touch which we would have made better use of during warm weather. There were multiple options for a quality meal and we were never disappointed. All this and still a ton of family friendly entertainment options - huge waterpark, pottery painting, arcade, mini golf, story time, holiday activities, tiger cub photos, playland, Kahunaville activities with dinner.

A couple of level setting comments. If you don't expect and/or plan for them and have high expectations they can be a difference maker for you. For us, none were a big deal in the end and we will definitely be back to the property.

1 - The property is huge - be prepared to walk. I swear, our room was somewhere near a half mile from the lobby, restaurants and pool area - bring comfortable shoes and pack light or get a luggage trolly.

2 - Prices for drinks and food are similar to what you find at a resort which can be pricey for a family on a budget, the good news is the quality was worth it for us. If you're bringing kids you'll likely want to bring along snacks/beverages for your room to supplement all of the goodies being sold.

3 - The resort is experiencing a staffing shortage in the waterpark area since many of the lifeguards have went back to school. On a not as busy day this isn't a big deal because there is still plenty to do and you hardly notice. On a busy day (our 3rd night was sold out) the waits can be long for slides, etc and you're left asking for more.

We had read reviews and talked to friends before we came, so we were expecting all of the above and had a wonderful time. Kalahari is a great property and a great resource for northern Ohio. I'm just bummed that we didn't try it sooner.

One last hint - ask for discount codes. We got a great deal!

  • Liked — Quality of property and attitude of staff
  • Disliked — The hike! This place is huge.

I recently stayed at Kalahari in a room prepaid for by my company who booked a block of rooms for employees. Upon check-in I was told I had to give a credit card number for incidentals. After arriving home I saw that they charged my for the room that was prepaid!!! DO NOT STAY HERE. If you do stay, may sure you check your credit card bill! If you need to resolve any issues with Kalari, you have to contact them before 5:00 pm (Hope you don't have a job)

We just returned from a one night stay at Kalahari and we were completely DISAPPOINTED! It is true, half of the waterpark attractions are now CLOSED! They are working on a rotation system and have half of everything closed at all times. Before making your reservations here, ask if all attractions will be open at the time of your stay.

After hearing all the buzz about Kalahari, we decided to take our first trip there. Hotel rooms were nice - but very expensive. We had a family of 7 so we had to purchase a 2 room suite (at a hefty cost of $450/night). Upon arrival, a large majority of attractions were CLOSED. The kids were very upset...had I known (there was nothing posted on the website about it)..I would have booked at another time. We traveled far to get here..and were not happy. The kids were miserable because they didnt get to do what we came there to do. I would recommend anyone going out without first calling to make sure everything will be open. We also ate at the buffet restaurant which cost us $200..and the food was ok at best.

Being Ohio residents, we had heard all the buzz about Kalahari and stayed this past weekend. Friday/Saturday September 12 and 13th. The hotel room, as indicated on the other reviews, was very nice. The waterpark was great fun HOWEVER not all the attractions were open. In fact, on Friday night at 9.15pm, the wave pool was closed (park open til 10pm). When I spoke to the front desk clerk she said that Ohio increased the number of life guards they needed, that the college students had mostly returned to college and thus they were short staffed. I told her that because of the price we paid, I expected all the attractions to be opened. She was surprised to hear that some had not opened at all on Friday night as they were supposed to rotate opening attractions. Same thing on Saturday--attractions rotated being open, however some did not open until after 3pm when we were supposed to be leaving.
Kalahari needs to get its act together or start providing discounts for guests who cannot enjoy the benefits!
