“Great place to go with kids!”
Reviewed August 18, 2010

We recently stayed at the lodge with several young children (4 and under). The lodge has many activities to keep them entertained. Indoor and outdoor pool, sprinkler pad, soft play area, game room, bike trails, playground, public beach and more! They also have activities scheduled throughout the day, like Duck, Duck, Goose, family movie night, etc. The only downside is lack of options for food. The restaurant on location is very good, but very pricey. The rooms have fridges, but no microwaves, so it limits what you can make, and there aren't many options for ordering or driving to. Overall though, we had a great time and would definitely go again. Rooms were clean and a good size, noise level was acceptable.

We just completed a 5 day stay in the cottages with my husbands large family ranging in age from 10 months to 77 years. We were a party of 13 and had 2 cottages.

The good - reasonable priced lodging with full kitchens make it affordable for family gatherings near my inlaws home. The pools are great for the kids although the outdoor pool could use some better entry steps, ladders are hard for little ones. The restaurant is basic all american food, the breaskfasts are hearty. The screen porches are great as is the central A/C (but you have to crank it up to make the loft even slightly cool). We got "in trouble" for opening the windows to let the fresh air in while running the A/C to bring the loft temp down to a reasonable temp for sleeping. The splash park at the inside pool is great and worked well for my pre-schoolers who needed a break from the hot sun.

The bad - the cottages are in need of updating. The beds were saggy and worn out, not the best night's sleep. The bathroom is not kid friendly at all, the toilet is so high my 4 year old needed a hand getting on and off, the shower is TINY and hard to navigate with little ones since there is no tub. The A/C works great on the first floor but doesn't do a darn thing for the sleeping loft. The snakes, while this is a nature preserve, I was afraid to let the kids play outside or near the pond because there were signs/warnings about snakes. Having to pay for the wireless access, the bikes, the kayaks etc... was a bummer. In the 21st century I expect these to be included in the price of a "resort". The lack of umbrellas in the pool area is a disapointment, it gets darn hot especially near the "baby" pool. A zero entry pool would be far more family friendly.

Not that the resort can do anything about this, but the fact this part of Lake Erie is considered "dead" makes it pretty un welcoming for swimming verses the shores of Lake Michigan where we have vacationed before.

More structured kid's activities would be great, they did have a 1hr long Wii tournament but we arrived a few minutes late and our kids were not able to get a spot.

Maumee Bay Resort far exceeded our expectations! Our room, the furnishings, the layout, etc., could not have been any better. The bed was probably one of the most comfortable we had over a 16 day trip, and the view from our ground floor room was the absolute BEST!! Our only disappointment was that we were only able to stay one night......we would have loved to have been able to stay longer and enjoy all the resort had to offer....which is everything a family could want! The pizza from Joe's delivered at 11pm was great, and I highly recommend you give them a call if you've got a pizza craving! Didn't have time to check out the on-site restaurants.....but I certainly saw a lot of ice cream cones being consumed!! Maybe next time! Hopefully we get back that direction one day so we can take full advantage of all the resort offers. We loved it and wouldn't hesitate to return!!

We were pleasantly surprised with this location. At first we worried that we would run out of things to do here but after a quick check-in we realized that we may run out of time before we got to see all there was to do.
We were there over 4th July for 3 nights and were with 2 young ones (2yrs and 4mos) as well as our elderly mother. It was great! We were able to request baby pack and plays for both kids, there was a "gym" suitable for our 2yr old where he could run and jump and not worry about being hurt.
There was an indoor pool that had fountains that gave us hours of entertainment not to mention the paddle boats and rentable bikes. The place was great.
The other bonus was that the resort welcomed outdoor food and furnished the rooms with fridges/freezer. We were able to buy fruit and have it in the morning without hassle of getting to the restaurant.
We hope to make it an annual affair and may have friends join us at the campground nearby.

Decided to spend the week at Maumee Bay while my husband had a conference there. My little kids, 6 & 7, had the BEST time. They have a small indoor play area, larger outdoor playground, nice size pool, splash pad, hot tub, & sauna. Our room & all the public areas were very clean, welcoming, & well maintained. We also enjoyed the nature trails on the property. We rented bikes & rode around the beach area as well. Very relaxing & beautiful. The breakfast was included in the package we got. It was truly fabulous, everyone in our party agreed. It was off season when we went, but thought the price was very good for all we received.

This is a beautiful hotel with great views of Lake Erie and lots of potential but overall it's not the most welcoming place you will stay. I would definetely recommend staying during the week as on the weekend they are booked with large groups who tend to overtake all of the public areas from the pool to the lobby to the racquet ball courts. These areas become essentially unusable for any one else. The staff definetely caters to the larger groups and really won't go out of their way to help anyone else or answer questions.

The outdoor pool is very nice when it's not overrun by family reunions. We did not use the indoor pool. They have a nice exercise room and racquet ball courts again when you can use them. The Lake Erire beach at the state park could be absolutely amazing if it were only a little cleaner. The state park also offers a swimming beach on an inland lake but it's extremely dirty and avoid the bathrooms at all costs. Yuck.

The resort also has an area down by the lake where you can sit on and enjoy the view, this was very nice and usually peaceful. Probably the best feature of the resort.

The room was farily dirty, especially the bathroom. I requested extra towels and put them down on the bathroom floor because there was no way we were touching it with our bare feet. The sink and vanity had a coating of dust as if it hadn't been wiped in months.

I know bugs are a problem on Lake Erie, but the balcony was pretty much unusable and looked like it hadn't been swept in a while. I will say that the beds were comfortable and the maids don't wake you up at the crack of dawn which was nice.

All of the rooms have a fridge. For a $20 fee they will put a microwave in your room. If you have a family, I recommend doing this and bringing some of your own food as the on-site restaruant is pricey. (check out their menu online). I would, however, add that the food is good and the staff of the restaruant is far friendlier than the hotel staff.

There is a snackbar open part of the day, but the next closest place to eat is a gas station about a mile down the road which has a Subway and Joe's Pizza Kitchen inside of it. You will see ads for Joe's Pizza Kitchen in your room directory. DO NOT order a pizza and have it delivered from here. The guy who delivered our pizza absolutely refused to give my husband our pizza or our change until my husband told him how much he was going to tip him. (This was on top of the $2 delivery charge). I have no problem with tipping but I've never had my food and change held hostage before. The guy was very aggressive, I thought the situation was going to turn physical even though my husband is a very mild mannered person.

Also, I'm guessing that their lodging tax is 8% because we paid a total of 15% sales tax on top of our nightly room rate. This can be quite a shock at check out time.

Overall, the attitude we got from this place was: they have a beautiful property with amazing views of Lake Erie and they know it. You'll pay whatever they want to charge, put up with below average service, and if you aren't a part of a large group or family reunion, you are not really that important.

I don't understand all the TripAdvisor complaining that goes on about Maumee Bay Lodge. Every time we have stayed, we have had nothing but an enjoyable time! Yes, there are often large groups / parties, but the areas / pools are plenty large enough to accommodate. Not to mention the beach area, walking trails, fishing, boating, etc.
It's a LODGE, not the Beverly Hilton; if you're not a nature lover then stay in a hoity toity hotel. The accommodations, restaurant, and staff are all above average, have made improvements and strive to make the stay enjoyable. My goodness, whenever we go and stay here, it's fancy to US! We are used to camping quite a bit, so it always feels like we're doing something really special when we stay at the lodge.
And if the only thing keeping you off your balcony is spiders, buy a can of bug spray or get a fly-swatter and quit complaining. Honestly, there are people in the world who don't even have a home or bed, and here some of you are whining about a few little spiders on your balcony. Give me a break!
This is a great family-oriented place to stay. Our kids always have a great time, and so do we!
