“Nice, clean, but not perfect”

If you have previously stayed at state park resorts in the Midwest, you’ll probably give this one a good rating. The rooms are spacious, with nice views of Lake Erie. The public areas are modern and impressive. However, our room’s balcony was unusable due to spiders (Albeit a common problem on Lake Erie), and the grounds looked like they could’ve used some TLC. Service and food in the restaurant was fair, at best.

This was just a stopover for my wife and I, so our expectations might have been different than families or larger groups may have for longer stays. For those folks, the amenities, activities, and reasonable prices available may well overshadow any of the minor issues we had with the resort.

If you are going to Maumee Bay for the first time then you should stay here. There are special packages avaiable. Look into it. The raquet ball courts, ping pong and pool are cool. Worth a 2 nite stay to relax and see lake Erie and walk a trail or two.

My husband and I wanted to have a romantic weekend getaway away from the kids and saw Maumee advertised on vistiohio.com. We reserved the buckeye package as it was a great value. Dinner one night, Breakfast both nights and a gift certificate to the gift shop. We checked in and took a walk to the indoor pool. There were two nice whirlpools and a large pool but they were all filled with people. We soon found out that during the winter months Maumee becomes party central for teenagers and children. We ate at the main restaurant and the food was cafeteria grade. When we walked to our room we noticed there were two different sweet 16 parties. They had 3 rooms each (a total of 6!) on our floor. The pool is open until midnight and they took advantage of that. Then running up and down the halls and laughing until 3:00 in the morning. The godsend - BREAKFAST - we had our pick ot the restaurant as they all must have been sleeping in. We took a trail walk and then drove to Toledo. We highly recommend Rockwell's for the best steak in town. Very romantic. When we returned we relaxed for awhile and then headed down to the pool. It was more filled than the night before. There were birthday parties galore and many families. When my husband and I finally got into the hot tub, the unattended children kept turning it on and off by pressing a button on the wall in the hall. By the third time this happened I had to dicipline the children, Got fed up and we changed and went to the bar. It was nice and peaceful until what must have been a wedding reception walked in and ruined it. They were loud and abnoxious and gave the ONE waitress/bartender a hard time. We decided to call it a night. At 9:30 we went back to our room. The night was a little quieter and we liked that checkout was at noon. So, if you come here to be alone with your spouse, I would say to try a cabin instead. If you are a family it is perfect. We would go again, but the next time, we will bring the boys and we will go in the summer.

We stayed at the Maumee Bay Resort and Conference Center on May 20-21, 2006, having two adjoining rooms. The requested adjoining rooms were available as requested, and had a view of the lake. The facility has two swimming pools, one indoor and one outside. There is also a large sheltered beach area for swimming. Extensive nature walks were available along with a nature center. There is also a golf course. There are a number of cabins, but we stayed in the lodge. The rooms were standard motel type rooms. The food was very good, and there was an excellent brunch on Sunday morning. We would definitely consider returning.

Having heard over the years some great comments about Maumee Bay Resort thought we would spend a winter weekend there- when the rates were on package specials- and with a chance of snow to possibly get in some cross-country skiing...
We booked a king room- which literally overlooked Lake Erie and we enjoyed a nearly private view as the temperatures were in the 20's !! We got to see it snow on Lake Erie too. The room was comfortable and had it's own mini-refridgerator which was very nice.Had a problem with the bathroom as it smelled very bad.. unfortunately the room attendants arrived and instead of "mopping it down" used a room spray on the floor and walls. It was effective -but would have preferred a better cleaning. There was only slight cleaning as well during our 3 nights stay-and trash cans were not emptied, coffee carafe not cleaned- we did this ourselves etc. Basically they came in and changed the towels and made the bed. On the up side.. there wasn't enough snow- so we did use the pool, hot tub- too hot, sauna, and excersise room. We also played ping-pong.
There is a nice nature center on the premises and a "board walk" trail through the woods- lovely with the ice and snow- plus saw a lot of white
tailed deer close up who wandered in the woods.
The dining room had a gourmet menu and we really enjoyed the food. There was also a cocktail lounge and beer and wine available. As it
is an Ohio State Park you may not bring alcohol into the hotel- however
you can buy drinks etc. there as the resort has a liquor license. We did buy a bottle of wine to take back to our room from the restaurant.
Outside of the room attendant problems- we did have a fun weekend.
Note: Avoid Sat. the locals bring their kids in for birthday parties etc. and the pool is packed as are the game rooms etc.

I just returned from Maumee Bay and stayed in one of the 4 bedroom cottages. The layout of the cabin was nice and the location was beautiful. Lots of wildlife too. However cleanliness and maintenance was not one of there strong points. Upon arrival we found the swithplate in the bathroom was cracked and kept falling off the wall and exposed the wires. A definate hazard considering it is next to a sink. One of the bunkbeds was missing its upper rail and in the upstairs bedroom the bunkbed was missing a finial and there was nothing but a sharp exposed screw. A definate danger for children. In that same room there was a large amount of garbage behind the dresser. Which showed me that they do not clean the cabins very well after each guest. Also upon arrival one of the living room lamps had know lightbulb in it and the kitchen light above the sink. It is such a shame that they cannot maintain the cabins any better. Would be a great place to stay if the could improve on this. But in my opinion bring your own cleaning supplies to clean up after others and enter at your own risk! There are several dangers in the cottages.

We just returned from a 3-day stay at Maumee Bay State Park. Our whole family stayed in one of the four-bedroom deluxe cabins.

You might think the sort of cabins or rooms you'd get a state park would be spartan. Wrong-o. A resort company runs the accommodations in Maumee Bay, and the lodgings are quite nice! The cottages are all built up on pilons and face either the golf course or the marsh woods. They've got soaring ceilings, interesting architecture, fireplaces, and modern kitchens. It's quite comfortable (although the furniture in the common room in our cottage needed to be retired). No bathtub in our cottage (two bathrooms, each with showers only).

There is lots to do right there in the park (nature center, boardwalk, marina, beaches at both Lake Erie and the inland lake, two pools, raquet sports, golf, game room, playground, canoeing...

A great place for a family getaway.
