Location: on the main street of Millersburg, Ohio, Rte 39, county seat of Holmes County, Ohio, the county with the largest concentration of Mennonite/Amish in the world, right across from the Courthouse. If you're in Holmes County to antique shop, Bags is a great place for lunch since it's in the middle of all the shops in downtown Millersburg.
Food: This isn't The Ritz so don't expect escargot, it's typical Pub Grub, well made, served hot, and juicey. Burgers, fries, a little fish, quite enjoyable. This includes a full selection of beer, which if you're like me you sample brands when traveling that aren't normally available atr home, wine, and liquor you'd find in any well stocked pub known to yourself.
Price: Ten bucks'll get you a couple beers, a burger and fries. Prices are consistent with any public house of this nature in Ohio.
Ambiance: Walk in and you go straight into the dining room, deep rich woodtone with golf bags hanging from the walls. TV's and beer advertising signs are never out of sight. Or you could turn left and head to the bar that parallels the dining room. Go through the door and you end up on the newly opened patio. With the recent passage in Ohio of a " no smoking in the building" law, more and more pubs and eateries are setting up outside venues to accommodate smokers, which for an old dutchmen like me harks back to the days of beer gardens where during the Summer one could sit outside in the cool night breeze, have a brew, and enjoy some company.
History: According to Bags website, he was born of Amish parents, picked up the nickname as a kid, left the area, then came back and opened this sports bar. During his sojourne away, he got into golf, thus the bags many of which are autographed and appear to be from Pros.
The Only Game In Town: Every restaurant (fast food excluded - only 2) in Holmes County closes at 3 P.M. on Sunday which makes it nearly impossible for a visitor to get a decent supper after that time. Based on interviews with locals and culling every website and written travel guide from the area, Bags is the only sit down restaurant I could find in the area that is open after 3 P.M. on Sunday, unless you care to drive 35 or 40 miles east or west of Millersburg. No matter, this is a great little place, cozy and comfortable, reasonable pricing, to dine.
