“Unique Property”

We had been here a couple of years ago for a day trip, had lunch and toured the castle. Loved the area and the thought of staying in the castle appealed to us. Things looked beautiful. So, we finally made plans to meet family here this past weekend. We had a great time and there were many nice things about our stay, but the past few years have taken their toll, both inside and out.
We stayed in the Barton Suite. Upon entering, the room really looked very rich with its dark wood, drapes and bedspread. The fireplace was such a nice feature and really did heat the room. We also liked the soft playing Celtic CD that was on when we arrived. Although we did not use the pool or hot tub, we did go into the building; it looked nice and the water was warm. However, there was a lot of maintenance that has been overlooked. Scrapes in walls, broken shower/tub handle, broken shelf in the refrigerator, cabinet handles in the suite; very bumpy entrance hill with way too many pot holes and VERY icy paths and parking spaces that really should have been salted as it was snowing the day we arrived. Also, since we had a room above us that was occupied, we did have some trouble sleeping since every footstep above us was able to be heard.
Overall, it was an awesome concept to be able to stay in a castle and we had a good time. However it is our opinion, that the place should be better maintained. Hopefully this will be done before it falls into total disrepair.

This place is on the ropes. I wish I would have listened to the other reviews. Completely under-staffed, and over-sold by the web-site. Rooms were outdated, and the facilities are in dire need of TLC. Save your money.

We stayed here as a gift from our sons and families. We stayed in the Macbeth Cottage as the castle was full for a wedding. The cottage is small but cozy, the website says there is a private hot tub on the deck but there is not one there currently. The tub is a spa tub but let the water run a bit before you close the drain to get the water hot. It was a snowy day and the roads were a bit dicy so be careful if you are arriving in winter. We ate in the dining room and the food was ok but not spectacular. The waitress was very nice and attentive. The view from the tower was very pretty with the snowfall. The gal at check in was very nice. The mini white lights on the steps up to the cottage was a nice touch. If steps are an issue, these steps are stone so they are very uneven, it adds to the character but could be difficult if using crutches etc. I wish we had arranged a sleigh ride but didn't think of it 24 hours ahead of arrival. The sheets were very soft. I wish the manager would read these reviews and take care of some of the concerns guests have identified.

We visited the castle on NOV 17th as a special treat for our anniversary. I admit I was worried by all the negative reviews before we arrived, but I am so glad we gave the castle a chance because it was amazing. We stayed in the Khim suite and I found accommodations to be warm, inviting and beautifully decorated. The suite was made up of heavy, glowing woodwork that felt sturdy and solid - not like you'd find in a cookie cutter hotel made up of plasterboard and plywood.
We never heard another one of our neighbors during our stay and felt romantically secluded in our room.
The fireplace worked perfectly, and when we had trouble with the DVD player, the girl at the front desk came all the way up to our room and helped us figure it out.
The hot tub in the pool area was closed and I gather it has been for quite some time. That was really the only thing I was disappointed about during our trip. The indoor pool was very warm and nice to swim in.
We had dinner in the restaurant and I thought it beautiful inside. It was decorated for the holidays with lots of warm, twinkling lights and country Christmas accents. The service was great, my water glass was never empty and the food was delicious. I had the flat iron steak with a spicy shrimp sauce that was Cajun through and through.
I would love to stay there again and try out different suites in the castle. it was a very romantic and unique destination - I hope others will give it a chance as well.

I should have listened to all of the reviews, but I thought there was no way it could be this bad..well it was. All of the other reviews are correct - the pot holes in the drive, the lack of maintenance on the property, the drab restaurant, etc. We will definitely not be making a return trip back, this is far from a "luxury" resort.

I was a little hesistant about our visit because of the negative reviews but we LOVED it. The castle is a bit remote so we were glad that we drove our SUV. The roads are quite bumpy but it adds to the charm. The castle is magnificent! As soon as we got a glimpse of it we knew we chose well. We felt like we had been transported back in time.

We loved reading about the history of the castle. We were amazed that the castle was created from 800 fallen logs that were on the property after a storm. Most of the stones in the castle were from the property. The suites in the castle are named after family members. We loved going up in the white tower. I think it was 6 flights of stairs. We felt like kids in a playhouse.

Tip: If you travel during the wintertime please get to the castle during the daylight. It gets very dark on the hill once the sun goes down.

We were greeted right away when we got to the lobby. The lobby has beverages, DVD rentals, board games, and toiletries. We didn't need anything but it was nice to know it was there. We also enjoyed the waffles during breakfast. I would have loved to have had some meat and potatoes to go with it but there was cereal, bagels, fresh fruit, juice and coffee.

When we got the instructions on how to get to our suite we took time to walk around the property and look over the gardens. We stayed in the Landoll suite. It is multi-level and has its own private walkway. It has great views of the property.

We loved that the music was playing when we entered our suite. It was very warm and inviting. The cathedral ceilings are phenomenal. We enjoyed exploring the different levels. The bed was warm and comfy and we loved the heated tiles in the bathroom. The jacuzzi tub is a little small but the shower was very roomy. You will want to make sure that you give the water several minutes to heat up. The sink water was hot right away but the tub and shower took a few mintues. I think it's because the suite sits up so high. Once its on it is nice and toasty.

There is a kitchenette - table & chairs, dishes, sink, microwave, coffee maker, and fridge. Just the essentials. If you need condiments bring them with you. There was a couch, satelite TV, DVD, and gas fireplace. There was a nook with two chairs and an ottoman. There is a beautiful spiral staircase to an upper level. It is a bit narrow but it was cool to go up and out onto the wrap around balcony.

One night we ate at the restaurant. We had the honey glazed pork chops and the beef casserole. Very tasty. It is good to make reservations because there are limited hours and I think there are only two people running the whole restaurant. Even so, we had great service and the food was delicious. Very nice selection on the menu.

We did see the notice that the hot tub was down for maintainance but we did not make it over to the pool/exercise facility. We did take a carriage ride. Awesome! We highly recommend it. Mike, our driver, was very dapper when he pulled up in the the carriage. We only took the half hour tour because it was quite brisk but his horse, Jack, took good care of us. It is a bumpy ride so be prepared!! But we loved every minute of it. TIP: If possible, schedule the carriage ride when you arrive. They need at least 24 hours to schedule. They were running a special and we were able to get a cheaper price than what was listed online.

ROOM TIP: When we checked in we received a flier that showed cheaper rates for our room than what we had paid. I guess its a sort of insider special. Next time we go, I will still reserve the suite I want months ahead of time but I will call the castle about a week before we go to see if there is a better rate. The room is worth every penny that we paid but hey.....a deal is a deal. :)

Most of the area activities are closed for the winter. Since we knew that ahead of time we planned a trip to Lodi outlet malls (52 minutes away) and shopped at some of the local stores. Just remember, if you are there on a Sunday everything closes early.

The staff was wonderful. Our check-in and check-out were great. Our housekeepers were awesome. I loved that we could schedule a time for our room to be cleaned. It gave us the opportunity to sleep until noon.
TIP: Read the flier that you are given at check-in. It answers alot of questions like....how do I turn on the gas fireplace.

We had planned to hike some trails. We did read in our check-in flier that the trails attached to the property are no longer open. However, the state park is just a few minutes away but honestly, it was so darn cozy in that suite that we didn't want to leave.

Room Tip: The rooms in the castle have walls that are 2 feet thick so it is like being in your own little slic...

This place is beautiful on the outside, beginning to show signs of neglect and scenery in the area is spectacular. It is obvious they are running either new management or on a shoestring by the declining conditions of the grounds and the outdated room decor, among other things. We still enjoyed our weekend but found the it WAY overpriced considering the condition of the room, very 80s, shabby, saggy couch and bed, out dated tv and sparse amenities. Ran out of toilet paper, room was barely cleaned by housekeeping. Lets not get into it about the restaurant... I sincerely hope they either get investors or I see this place going under. You can only lure people here from pictures for so long, your price and growing poor reputation is catching up with you!
