“Disappointing Stay”
Reviewed September 2, 2013

We have been enjoying this wonderful old hotel for years, however this Labor Day weekend was disappointing. The charm of this old hotel has worn off. This time it was just plain dirty and run down. While the hotel is run by the Lakeside Chautauqua, the amateur management charges professional prices, with rooms running toward $200/night. We checked in and the sink area was dirty. We thought we would just let the maid know the next day, but while we were gone all day with the tag hanging for maid service, no one ever showed. When I mentioned all this to the desk clerk upon checking out today, she offered no apologies, just, "They don't have time to come back if they have to skip your room." I had posted the "Do not disturb" sign from 4 - 5 PM. If they were volunteers, I might understand, but not at $200/night. There was a layer of dust in the room and a broken window pane. The toilet/shower in the room we had was extremely tiny and shoddy. Bottom of the line shower stall. The bathroom door does not even close. Most disturbing was having no privacy because of old doors to adjoining rooms allowing us to hear even the page turning of the newspaper in the next room. The large back porch railings have dangerously rotted off at the bottom and wobble if touched. The grand Lakeside porch, a peaceful area to read and watch Lake Erie, is no more. Last night, with no special program or excuse, various people (hotel lobby and porch open to all), had marked their territory with sacks, picnic baskets, hats, etc. so all the tables were "taken", yet empty. I believe many of the people doing this are not even guests. Strangely, the residents of Lakeside even drape the park benches with blankets to save seats for the fireworks show. This once charming destination has lost its charm for us. This was our last trip there.

Room Tip: Do NOT stay in any of the rooms facing the lake. These have only token bathrooms.

Quaint, charming, lovely, quiet all describe this historic hotel. The room we had was small but clean, comfy bed, clean bathroom. Situated in Lakeside, Oh. So much to do...grab a golf cart and see the little town with old and new homes. Take an ice cream and watch the sunset over Lake Erie from a lakeside bench. Good restaurant, HUGE summer screened porch which has many board games, or sit on the comfy chairs and watch the sunset or read a good book.

Room Tip: Try and get a room at the front of the hotel facing the lake.

Wonderful historic ambience. Nice view of the lake. Clean room. No amenities (not even a bottle of water in the empty soda machine). Worst mattress I have ever slept on - so uncomfortable that I couldn't sleep. There are 10-12 parking spots adjacent to the hotel - good luck getting one. No-frills continental breakast - which is all they advertise. If you're young and are comfortable sleeping on the floor-like mattresses, like shuffleboard, ice-cream, putt-putt, and a very safe place to take your kids, this is it. Otherwise, skip it. P.S - no television - which I guess might be a good thing. Also, fill your wallet with enough money to pay for each person in your car AND your car to get into Lakeside; it would be nice if it was waived if you had a reservation to stay there.

My mom and I stay at Hotel Lakeside once a year. If you look at my other reviews You'll notice that I gravitate toward high-end, boutique hotels. This does not fall into either of those categories.

What I love about this hotel is the ambiance--unrivaled by anywhere else in the world. The hotel itself is a historic landmark and they've done a lovely job of maintaining it's character. The lobby has all original furniture, beautiful hardwood floors and an old fashioned record player from the turn of the century that works.

My favorite part of the hotel is the screened in porch overlooking a beautiful fountain and a pier that juts into Lake Erie. I'm actually sitting in the porch now watching a storm roll in.

The rooms aren't amazing. They remind me more of a bed and breakfast than a hotel. The rooms are very clean and decorated to reflect the age of the hotel with old fashioned wallpaper and original furniture all in beautiful condition. The bathrooms are small--Europe small. No frills or bells and whistles.

They do offer a free continental breakfast of baked goods, juice, cereal, yogurt, tea and coffee. They are crazy militant about ending breakfast at 9:30 so get your food early!

The location is amazing. The hotel is only open in the summer because it doesn't have heat! It's located In a chatauqua community established in the 1800s. It's really like walking into an old fashioned town--looks and feels like one with kids riding bikes down the streets, families eating ice cream on park benches and barbershop quartets singing at the auditorium. For someone who lives in dc this is a welcome respite from the hustle and bustled of the "real world"

Be forewarned that if you stay here May through September you have to pay a gate free for each member in your party and your vehicle for each day you stay. My mom and I paid $44 for one day.

Make sure you watch the sunset from the pier, get ice cream and the Whistle Stop, and visit the adorable and unique shops. Also bring a blow dryer and conditioner because there aren't any in the rooms.

Room Tip: Get a room with a lake view and make sure it has it's own bathroom--some are across the hall!

We ate lunch in the Hotel Lakeside Dining room while attending the West Ohio Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church session at Lakeside. Our server, Andrea, was courteous, knowledgable and helpful.

The food was delicious, and we chose a healthy entree. We had a lovely view of the grounds and a view that extended out over Lake Erie.

I have never stayed at the Hotel Lakeside, but I have heard good reports about the accommodations. I can tell you the dining room is an excellent experience. I would recommend it if you are ever at Lakeside.

Room Tip: Ask for a table by the window. The view is exquisite.

This summer we stayed at the historic Hotel Lakeside in the "Chataqua on Lake Erie" community of Lakeside, OH. The old hotel is charming and the service is outstanding; however, the rooms are tiny and in somewhat shabby condition. The location can't be beat and if you are lucky to reserve a lake-front room with view, it is still delightful. The best part is being inside Lakeside and taking advantage of all this amazing community has to offer. Despite the "Average" rating of the room, we would probably go back and would recommend it to others, with the caveat that it is an old, old hotel!
