The camp site is only a short walk from the parking lot.
Amenities include a fire ring, picnic table, BBQ grill, and plenty of free firewood on site. Hammock campers will find great tree choices, and tent campers have at least a half dozen good spots to pitch.
Restrooms are not on site, but are designated on the provided map.

I had never been to a park like this one; my husband and I visited with our son-in-law and 2 1/2 year old granddaughter. She had a blast! The play area is all "natural" - logs and stumps and things on which to climb, which she loved. Then we found the big sand lot, complete with running water. Fortunately it was a hot day, as she was soaked by the time we left, but so much fun! Will definitely return on our next visit to Cleveland.

I went here to go hiking with my son. There are many trails offered with different degrees of difficulty. If you want something even more, they have guided hikes that go off the path that are offered at different times. My son loves the animals that have been rescued that they house there for educational purposes. There is a small visitors center and gift shop where you can purchase beverages or ice cream. There is a park for small children, and there is a free train ride offered on certain days (see website.) We spent a couple hours hiking and looking around. It was fun and not overly strenuous.

My family visited the Lake Shore Live Steamers for their public day. Their track layout is very impressive and the free train rides were lots of fun! Everyone was very friendly and it was nice of them to offer the free train rides. I suggest this for anyone with children and also any railfans, this is a really great time!

Thank you, Lake Shore Live Steamers!

Note, there are two buildings at Penitentiary Glen Reservation that have nothing to do with Lake Shore Live Steamers and have signs next to the door labeling them as no-gun zones. Be aware of relevant laws or simply avoid these buildings and stick to the railroad and the hiking trails.

If you're looking for a Lake County park that will have something for everyone, this is your best bet. The nature play area is great for kids (big and little) and when the trains are running, you'll see kids and adults enjoying those as well (check the website for dates and times -- it can be crowded, but well worth the wait). There are paved travels, gravel trails, some trails that are easy and others that can be enjoyed by the more athletic hiker. Check out the animals on display in the wildlife center and also go inside the former horse barn of the Halle Estate to learn more about the property and the nature to be found on it. In the winter, you can obtain snowshoes and there are picnic tables and fire pits for those who want to relax a bit. Check the website for Gorge Hikes -- you can't enter this area unless on a registered hike and everyone should do that walk at least once (kids can't be carried).
