Gordon Quinn is a delightfully amiable host and chef who delivers superb food by the sea at Wynyard. This is must stop for us whenever we travel the Bass Highway, breakfast, lunch or dinner. Gordon never fails to deliver.

Hi AlixSlee
Great review, thanks so much! As much as I love chef'ing, I can't stay in the kitchen when I get such nice customers through the door. Hope to see you at Splash again soon - and apologies for the late response, we're just figuring out this technology a bit slower than some! Cheers.

Splash is known for its Friday night Tapas. Tonight we tasted the local produce with a Scottish theme. Sad to say we couldn't eat it all. The serving are very generous! The haggis fantastic. GORDON you did the local producers proud. We will be back when next in tassie .

Hi elsamay
You must be due for another visit by now, surely?! Thanks for the great review - our theme nights are still proving popular, although this time of year we tend to give them a rest as we get lots of Christmas/end of year functions booking our Friday/Saturday nights. Hope to see you again soon and thanks again.

Splash is a nondescript litte cafe restaurant situated just outside the gates of the Beach Retreat tourist park on the foreshore at Wynyard. But don't let it's modest external appearance fool you into thinking this is just another cafe/takeaway serving soggy fish and chips or rubbery calamari.
We dropped in for a coffee after a fairly strenuous drive through some windy and steep interior Tasmanian Roads. The coffee was excellent, and we were quite taken with the simple but interesting decor which harkened back to England and the chef's origins.. The menu looked appetising, and since we hadn't eaten out for a while, we resolved to eat there that evening.
We both chose herb-encrusted salmon. and we weren't disappointed. The salmon was beautifully cooked, with the herbs adding a delightful crunchy sort of nuttiness to the overall flavour. It rested on a bed of mashed potato and broccoli which further enhanced the flavour. The plate was trimmed with chopped tomato and onion which nicely complimented the remainder of the meal. By the time we'd both finished, all that was left was the remains of the slice of lemon we'd squeezed over the salmon. For me, this is nothing unusual, but for my wife, who usually eats like a sparrow, this was a genuine indication of the high quality of the meal.
The quantity of food was just right, too, this was a chef who didn't need to make up for poor quality by overloading the plate. My wife was pleased with the attractive and colourful presentation- although this was of no consequence to me- as long as it tastes good I'd be happy if it came on a shovel.
We decided to try the dessert "sampler" as choosing just one was too hard.We were presented with a dessert plate with four serves on it. It was just as well we only asked for one! My favourite was a sort of lemon blancmange which had a delicious although subtle flavour. My wife's favourite was the rhubarb pie, we both agreed that the caramelised apple cheesecake came in a close third, with the bread and butter pudding with a hint of chocolate) in last position. However, it was a close-run contest and we both enjoyed them all. There was nothing left when the coffees arrived.
At the time of writing this was a BYO restaurant, so if you want alcohol with your meal you need to supply it yourself.
And the price for this magnificent repast? Well, we had change from $80 for the two of us. We've paid twice as much for less at some other supposedly first-class restaurants in Hobart.
This restaurant is right on the beach, and we ate our meals watching the colours of the sunset to the sounds of some quiet music playiing in the background. It's going to be a long time before we encounter a setting as good as this with such quality food for such a reasonable price. But be aware- there were only 9 tables, so if it could be a busy night, you'd better book, or be early.
