on the last few days of relatives visiting from the uk they said they had read in the lonely planet guide about peppermint bay for good food and great location, as we live in a great location at little swanport we thought it might be a nice day out, so after driving for approx 90min we arrive at peppermint bay and proceed to a table in the outside courtyard, order some drinks and four meals all different, the meals arrived in good time and the waiter was verry pleasant, but that was the end of the pleasantries as the meal i ordered was fillet steak main meal [as there was no mussels] all i got was two very small pieces of red meat on a metal skewer, when i asked the waiter if the meal came with any veggies he said only as a side order so i said i would like some veggies, ten minutes lates i was given a small bowl of lettuce leaves, thats $22..00 for the steak and i think they wanted $8.00 for the lettuce leaves which i told them at the desk when paying i didnt class the lettuce as vegitables so they didnt charge for the lettuce, very generous.
the other three meals ordered were ocean trout, well im glad it wasnt a windy day or it would have blown back in the ocean, tasteless and not much there for the money.
The pizza that was ordered was interesting to say the least i have never seen pizza with a little of melted cheese and loaded up with a pile that dreaded lettuce, shocking.
The last meal was the fish and chips which my wife enjoyed even though we could have bought it at hobart docks for half the price. all things considered the experience was not good and the report going back to the uk will allso be not good. oh well we tried.

We are at the "local's" bistro upstairs and sat out on the deck overlooking the beautiful channel. I had the spring vege and halumi salad which was just divine.

The title and previous few reviews say it all... in a beautiful part of Tassie, Peppermint Bay was a real treat and well worth going out of your way for.

I'd seen their website and the sample menu looked amazing, but don't forget there are 2 seperate sections to this place... the cafe/bar (with outside terrace seating as well) and Stacking Restairant. Whilst the cafe/bar is open most of the day and evening, they only serve food between 12-3 and 5.30 onwards. We were told you need to book for Stackings, but I feel this is more for the fact they have a lot of functions and weddings (as there was today) and then is closed to the public. So we hit the cafe/bar, which has a great atmosphere and felt just like a restaurant, but more relaxed.

We arrived about 4.30 and had to wait to eat, but the wait was well worth it. Plenty of great Tassie beers and wines to choose from, we sat on stools facing the window looking out onto the bay and Bruney Island... stunning!

Service was a touch slow to start with, but they were right into the afternoon tea crowd. You could approach the bar to order if you wanted to speed things up a bit, but this part of the world is not about rushing and getting things done fast. Slow down, relax and enjoy the pace of life!

The waiter came and grabbed our order before 5.30, so we didn't have to wait much longer. Then menu had a a great balance and should cater to most tastes, without being excessive in choices. We ordered a bunch of the local oysters which were fresh, plump and swimming in delicious salty liquid.

Next came our mains (I would also not call this bar food)... Sherry Braised Short Rib, this was a generous piece of meat slow cooked to perfection. The meat was falling off the bone as soon as my fork touched it, but a beautiful crisp layer on one side gave it a great feel. Beautifully accompanied with thinly sliced pickled radish (I think) and cabbage... this really balanced out the massive meat fix and cut through the fat with the vinegary, crisp flavour.

Alongside the rib, we went for the Smoked Salmon, potato and beetroot salad. Simply delicious! A great balance of delicious local smoky Tassie Salmon, soft potatoes and beetroot, with a lovely dill, gherkin and (possibly) mayonnaise dressing.

We matched the Oysters with a Clement Hills Sav Blanc and the mains with a Clement Hills Pinot. The wine was superb, best thing we found was the bottle shop next to entrance that stocks most of the wines on the menu, but at cheaper prices... so we picked up a few bottles on the way out.

Coffee to end was actually really good for mine, not burnt, but full flavour and not too milky. Perfection!

Paid $100 for 2 of us (not including the extra bottles of wine), so not cheap... but if you enjoy great food, good local produce and excellent service definitely head out of your way to try it out (please be patient though, I think the main thing that makes bad service is a bad customer).

Me,my husband and son were making our first foray into Tasmania when we came across this little gem. Our friends had told us that Bruny Island was a must and whilst down that way we decided to explore a bit more of the channel. The area is stunning, beautiful views and with breathtaking weather to match! As mainlanders, we bought into the Tasmanian stereotype and had come with an entourage of scarfs and woolly hats! No need!
We had been driving from early in the morning when we stumbled across Peppermint Bay, we were hungry and tired. It was lunch time on a Sunday and predictably busy. We were sill greeted however by a smiling waiter who showed us to a table promptly and talked us through their special board behind the bar.
Firstly, the menu. Very good. Calling it their bar menu, seemed almost insulting. My husband had the sherry braised beef rib, whilst i tried the brisket with the bubble and squek from the specials board and my son had the fish and chips. When the food came out, it was perfect. The brisket was beautifully cooked, the sherry rib was lovely and my sons fish and chips kept him quiet!
Secondly, the drinks menu. Lots of options on the wine list, mainly locally produced in Tasmania which we thought was a nice touch. My husband had the Pinot Noir, house red. Very nice. Good selection of beers as well.
Thirdly, service. It was a little slow, due to busyness, but the standard was fantastic. I haven't enjoyed such good service for a very long time. The waiter who had welcomed us at the door and served us throughout our stay was great. We had a really good laugh and a lot of fun and from the laughter he was getting from the other tables we could tell we weren't the only ones. It was a really nice atmosphere and environment to eat in. He was clearly enjoying himself and it rubbed off on us. We had a laugh when my husband asked for an ice bucket with his red wine to which he rolled his eyes and said 'only in australia!'. It made us feel welcome and wanted, something which is all to rare in restaurants, and i would suggest Peppermint Bay to anyone.

Beautiful setting with a comprehensive lunch menu. food was delicious. The service was slow due to low staffing levels however the staff were knowledgeable and very personable.
