The Farm Gate Cafe (BYO) would be the best kept secret in Tasmania - and we found it!! Just 30 minutes south on the Channel Highway, it's open Thursday through Sunday both eat in and retail. We visited on a Sunday the day after they had conducted a sausage-making course. We enjoyed the best ever pork & fennel sausages plus a pork hamburger that rates entry into the Hamburger Hall of Fame. Owner Lee Christmas is the chef and a master smallgoods maker and he specialises in free-range pork items featuring his own Wessex pigs. He explained he was increasing production to offer a greater retail range of his pork range including sausages and green bacon. Also we saw that Lee was installing a traditional Pizza oven in the next week or so. Lee's wife Jessica makes all the sweets and their range of cakes, tortes and tarts are the other reason to visit. We will be back soon - especially to experience their Pizzas!!
