“Lovely cottage, garden could be a selling point”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2012

Enjoyed our 2 night start in the studio cottage. Nice bed and really quaint cottage, still a good size for a couple. The early risers will love the big, uncovered, windows in the pitched ceiling arch. We are sleeper inners though.
Clean, tidy, nice cereals, kitchen basics.
The little courtyard garden could be great with some more maintenance. The garden around the main house looks really well kept in comparison.

I understand the mixed reviews that I have read, as I kind of have mixed feelings, but generally felt like it was a nice visit.

The cottages are a very quick drive from town but it would have been a 20 min walk to anything. Definitely doable. Being off season, almost nothing was open, and certainly not past 8pm, except for this one pub (the one that has the bakery attached). It was a godsend since we arrived hungry at 9pm on our first night and would have perished had it not been for the chips and toastie at the pub.

When searching for a cabin, we were seeking something old and beautiful instead of one of the many 1960's places in which we had no interest. Our cottage was built in 1987 (hollyhock) which was a bit of a disappointment since we were picturing 1800's. But all was fine, it fit right in with the rest of the property.

Some highlights... the fireplace was ready to light! It was all set up, which I thought was an awesome touch. The place was super cozy and comfy. The gardens are very well maintained, and I don't agree with the other review that said the place was on the verge of falling into disrepair. It still looked great even though we were there in the thick of winter. Coffee, milk and cereal were supplied, as was a nice decanter of dessert wine! And I was pleasantly surprised to see that the fruit bowl was chock full of real fruit - could have sworn it would have been fake. The bedrooms were comfortable and I slept deeply, especially with the heated blanket. And again, the gardens.

Some of the things I didn't enjoy as much ... the bathroom and kitchen looked a bit '80s or something. Just a bit off and I didn't love the feel of those rooms. The water was not drinkable, which was surprising given the natural environment and it would have been nice to have a bottle there waiting for us. Also, thought it would have been a truly old cottage, but finding out it was from the '80s was a bit of a buzz kill. Lastly, we never saw one other person, which sounds like the norm even on peak. And this means that you can't borrow any of the DVD's that tease you on the rack through the window of the locked up reception room. Luckily you can rent from the IGA in town with no ID or contract.

I arrived stressed, and left completely relaxed and happy to have enjoyed the Wagner cottages. A fun little getaway - I would stay again, for sure.

For what we received it was way over priced. Location 2 km out of Swansea on the main road. Traffic noise, particularly from heavy trucks, made sleeping difficult. Owners are selling and it was all booked by the net and we saw no-one over the 4 days we were there. It was totally impersonal. Instruction on the reception door was to phone this mobile in case of a problem. It is in the process of becoming run down. Breakfast provisions were 2 375 ml cartons of milk and 2 jars of stale cereals. No BBQ provided so cook inside in summer. No change of towels available. Inadequate provision of literature on where to go and what to see. It was small. From earlier reviews it had been a good venue but we found it to be verging towards fraudulent in its advertising and vastly overpriced.

My partner and I stayed in the spa cottage. The weather was terrible so we decided to stay in for dinner, which was great as most cooking equipment was provided for us. The spa was a great addition to the humble cottage.
Unfortunately during the night we had an infestation of millipedes crawling from underneath the bottom of the back door and between the cracks. They were everywhere all over the floor. By the time we realised this, they were already crawling through the lounge room. Now, I know they cant hurt you, but imagine trying to sleep that night! Luckily there was a bug spray provided, although that hardly stopped them. We informed the owner of it and she kind of laughed it off as if it was to be expected...
The place was fairly clean, although cobwebs were all over the place, I suppose that added to the "charm"? Overall a lovely little place to stay but the with experience with the millipedes, and the owner not really giving a hoot about it - I would not like to go back there.

Charming cottages located 1 - 2 km outside town. Beautiful area.

Note that the water is not potable and you will need to buy bottled water for drinking. Tap water is discolored and otherwise not suitable for drinking so we also used bottled water for tooth brushing and all cooking, coffee making, etc. Managers should have notified patrons in advance. They sell bottles of water, but it is much cheaper to go to town and buy your own in larger containers.

Also, in Wagner's Cottage, the bedroom is upstairs and the bathroom on the ground floor, so be prepared.

There seem to be 2 managers. One was courteous but the one who checked us in was not and did not, even then, inform us that the water was not safe to drink. We discovered a note to that effect after we had moved in.

As with a lot of B&Bs in Tasmania
- their definition of a continental breakfast is a loaf of bread with some orange juice and cereal in containers, which if you are there for more than 1 night is suppose to last for the whole of your stay
- the cottage isn't serviced during the whole time of your stay so if you are staying for an extended time soap, shampoo etc may run low
The cottage itself was very comfortable however the road noise especially a large truck pulling up out the front at 11.30 at night, can interrupt your sleep. Also the large windows in each end of the cotage that have no blinds means that the sun, street light etc illuminates the room early and late.
The studio cottage is also right next to the driveway to the reception so you hear all incoming and outgoing traffic. So therefore would recommend one of the other cottages.
Need to also realise that the cottage is 1.5km out of Swansea and there is no shops or restuarants within walking distance. It is suppose to be a 10 minute walk to the beach but we could never determine where the track was. It is more like a 20-30 minute walk along the roads.
It was a great spot to bring takeaway food for dinner and sit in the private courtyard for dinner. It was also a great spot for just sitting and reading books etc

Stayed at Wagners Cottage for one night and was very impressed with the accommodation for both quality and cleanliness.
Kitchen was well stocked and good breakfast provisions provided. Bedroom was lovely with comfy bed and plenty of head room even though room in the eaves accessed by new staircase!
Open fire was prepared and greatly appreciated as was a bit of a chill in the air the night we stayed!
Good base for exploring the Freycinet Peninsula and had lovely meal at local restaurant in Swansea.
Would definitely stay here again.
