This was one of the highlights of our trip. I was expensive for a family, but we saved for it and found it well worth the expense. The lunch boxes were pretty ordinary, but we weren't there for the food! The scenery was breathtaking, and the commentary informative, giving us a good idea of the massive effort that went into building the railway. We loved the steam locomotives on the rack & pinion section of the railway (yes we had a real treat with TWO locomotives as one was on its test outing after being rebuilt). In this age of good roads and reliable vehicles, it is sometimes hard to appreciate just how vital the railway was as a way of keeping in touch with the rest of the world in places like Queenstown. I'd heartily recommend this railway trip to anyone - save up if necessary and you won't be disappointed.

I am not a huge fan of train trip but would not hesitate to recommend this trip to anyone. It was well run and very interesting - well worth it for anyone visiting this area. The tour guides made history come to life

A trully enjoyable experience. Highly recommend to people of all ages. This amazing half day trip has been well thought through with commentary and visual displays to highlight the history of the west and just how important the railway was to developing it.
This trip is an absolute must for history lovers, train enthusiasts, steamies, and those who love the wilderness. The views are spectacular and the facilities excellent. My family travelled aboard in the standard carriage and found it very comfortable. Staff were friendly, professional and informative. Lunch was fresh and tasty and although snacks were available for purchase we were able to take our own.
The regular stops were welcomed as a great opportunity to stretch our legs and take in the scenery. Particularly by our 18 month old who bypassed his usually nap time to take it all in.
Although at the higher end cost wise for us for an attraction it was well worth the money. Hope to do it all again next time we holiday to Tas.

The day was ok and great to get the history and scenery. Commentary was good. Was a long day with a toddler. Seats face each other which isn't great. Food was poor and served on the platform with not many places to sit and eat and enjoy the scenery. Train not airconditioned. Take Bug spray as there were flys everywhere!!

This package showcases the historical impact of mining and the railway in this wonderful wilderness. If you have any ounce of interest in history, engineering, nature or environment then you will enjoy this trip. Yes you may find better aspects of each in the world, but not in this unique form. Expensive, maybe, but start to think of how much is required to restore, maintain and run this railway, and how important it is for the economy in this part of the world, and then it seems good value.
