Owner description: Highfield Historic Site is an 1830's farm complex built by convict labor. The Van Diemen's Land Company chose to settle in the area to establish a large scale sheep grazing property. The site is open to the public and interprets the conflicts that arose with the Company's men and the Aboriginal people. The house and outbuildings are being restored by the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service as the property had fallen into disrepair. The site is open daily from 1 September - 31 May, open weekdays from 1 June - 31 August

“Wonderful history in Stanley”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 23, 2013

This wonderful estate and historic home is well worth a visit if you are interested in Tasmanian history and in particular that of the Van Diemen's Land Company. The grounds are also very picturesque and while we were visiting preparations for a wedding later that day were being set up in one of the outbuildings - a great venue. The views of Stanley are also lovely.

“Interesting homestead”

The exterior of the house is lovely with fabulous out buildings - great for photos. The views are fantastic , the interior is sparsely furnished but interesting historically.

“Highfield house”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 15, 2013

The views alone make the trip to Highfield House worthwhile, but the house is beautiful. A great job has been done to make it interesting and informative, and gives you a real sense of the history of the building and the convicts. I thought it might be a little boring but it wasn't in the slightest. It was great that you could see practically every aspect of the house, the cellar, the stables, the church and schoolroom. Definitely worth a visit.

“Caught up in the story”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 14, 2013

I loved Stanley and the Nut, and got very interested in the history of the exploration and founding of this area. I enjoyed seeing the Highfield site, and bought the history book to learn more. It was a real struggle for the early settlers and explorers, and even more so for the Aborigines and convicts.
