“Interesting Stay”
Reviewed February 26, 2014

I arrived mid afternoon and called the manager on the phone. There is no Reception and I was the only one staying that night. The room was excellent, very clean and tidy. I was on a motorbike and there was undercover parking at the rear of the house. The location is excellent and very quiet. The meal at the local pub was outstanding. The breakfast room was large with a limited selection for breakfast.

We stayed in Hudson House, which is one of the houses in this group of cottages. Ross is a beautiful little township and the work the owners have done on this cottage in restoration work is amazing. Having said that, we found it disappointing. The bedspread in the main bedroom hadn't been washed and had blood on it, there wasn't even milk provided for a cup of tea, the DVD player on the television didn't work and the seating in the lounge area was inadequate for four people and uncomfortable. The compendium was full of information about the restoration work but not much else. It is a beautiful cottage with great potential but I wouldn't recommend. There doesn't seem to be a great deal of choice in this quaint little town but you could try having a look at the little township a little further along the highway - Oatlands - not sure what accommodation here is like but you could make some enquiries. It is also a beautiful old town, although not as tiny as Ross, so there may be more choices available.

This is one to avoid in Ross. My homework let me down so I hope your doesn't! Fortunately we only stayed on night.

We were surprised to find the hosts do not live in. You arrive and speak to a intercom and get your key from a safe. Later we were told by a local the owner lives in Launceston? So, there is no one to show you around and make sure you get settled and no one to speak to about things to do or places to eat etc....

Our room was barely reasonable; not really clean and showing plenty of wear. I found the bed hard and bony. The gardens and grounds are a mess. The so called rose garden is unkempt and not much is done to present the property at all.

Breakfast is a farce! A complete 'fend for yourself' deal here! You get frozen bread left in the freezer and some cheap packaged fruit, milk and juice in the fridge. Good luck with this!

For the price, this is not up to scratch - in fact my opinion is that it is a blatant rip off. We had just come from an excellent B&B in Launceston which cost about the same and was a much better property. As I write this we are in another B&B where we were met by the host, welcomed and shown around and settled into our room. This is what we expect of this style of property. YMMV

Room Tip: Best to avoid this property!

I was unaware when booking that this property was unhosted and that no one would be there to meet us. I found the instructions for contacting the owner confusing and so we waited over an hour to be let in. The rooms were small but very clean and also very quiet. The property is set in the centre of this lovely town and an easy walk to all attractions. Breakfast was a " do it yourself" affair and I expected more than instant coffee and frozen bread from the freezer ,although there were a small selection of cereals and spreads .We were'nt given instruction on what to do when we left so we had to just lock up and leave the key where we found it.There was no compendium that would have given us instructions.

Based on our experience, this cottage did not come up to scratch, no where near. We arrived for a two night stay, that had been paid for in advance, but we could not bare to stay another night after the first one, and ruin our holiday, so we checked out and moved on. The cottage was cold, smelt damp and was very minimally equipped for a self catering cottage. The bed was uncomfortable, but the sheets had been laundered. The bathroom was cold and the shower leaks, the floor under the rug in front of the open fire is broken. The lounge furniture was fit for the skip. We found the cottage less than clean. The cottage has not been refurbished to a standard that you would expect it to be, when being rented out to paying guests. We have stayed as guests and lived in period cottages much older than this one over a number of years, but this has to be the least attractive, and certainly not the romantic 'nest' the advertising title suggests. Cannot recommend to others. Ross is worth a visit though, but don't go and spoil it and stay at this cottage.

This place was simply put far too expensive for what was provided. The coffee making facilities were the bare minimum. It does benefit from an apparition. If only he brought some service! It was clean but compared to other places we utilised it cannot be recommended

We have just spent four lovely days in the friendly colonial town of Ross in the Tasmanian Midlands. The weather was cool, but we were snug and warm in our little cottage.
Everything has been thought of in the cottage, there is even a washing machine (though no drier or washing line). The bathroom was a very good size and the large shower head was an added bonus. Our only complaint was that the pillows were a little too hard for our liking, and some instructions for the portable convection hot plate would have been helpful.
The owner and host, Tim, is a lovely friendly person and a wealth of information about the area.
We would happily recommend this accommodation.
