“Rude, Unfriendly Staff”
Reviewed January 10, 2013

We checked into this hotel on Friday 6 January. Having visited the Port Arthur historical site that day we learned that there was a fire on the Tasman Peninsula. We decided to stay at the Fox & Hounds for the night rather than risk driving to Dunalley which was where the fire was heading. Having just arrived within 15 minutes the power had gone out. We had no lighting, no airconditioning (it was 39 degrees in the room) and no water which meant we couldn't flush the toilet as their water supply is generated by electric pumps. We were very concerned and asked the owner/manager what was happening. She explained that it was due to the fire. We then asked if we would be safe staying there. She told us just to familiarise ourselves with the water. (The Fox & Hounds Inn is surrounded by heavy, dense bushland). She said that she would knock on our door if the fire was getting closer! We were very worried and thought we might try and head back to the Port Arthur historic site as it was more open with less bushland around and being completely surrounded by water we would feel safer there. She told us that we couldn't go there as they had told her not to send people down as they would be sent back! We had booked to stay for dinner, but with no lighting and power this wasn't going to happen and she didn't offer us any alternative options. We ended up going to the Port Arthur historic site regardless as we were very worried about our safety. The staff at Port Arthur did a fantastic job looking after the hundreds of people who sought refuge there and provided us with food and drinks. Luckily we managed to get a ferry from Nubeena to Hobart later that night which the staff at Port Arthur had arranged for those who wanted to get back. The next day I rang up Fox & Hounds Inn and tried to explain why we had left in a hurry. The lady who answered the phone was so rude and told me that we would still be charged $50.00 for using the room as they would have to clean it! I explained that we couldn't use anything as there was no lighting and power and we didn't stay long. She was very rude and said "You have no idea what an emergency fire situation is!" and hung up on me. We will never stay at this hotel ever again. The staff were so rude. They didn't have a fire evacuation plan in place and they didn't try to reassure their guests.

Stayed Dec 2012- never again! (although heard it was up for sale?)
Restaurant a Monty Python skit- Freezing but don't add wood or we (staff) won't be out of here by 9.30. Food dreadful, male staff rude, all too hard!
Note requesting not to sleep on pillows matching doona cover...do they not change them? Notes everywhere requesting not to use this or use it and clean it ! Gorgeous setting but tired and desperately in need of TLC (and happy staff)

Our travel agency booked this. After a day Port Arthur, we went to Fox and Hounds, which looked ok from the outside. but... it was different on the inside. Grey bed linen, clear signs of not hygienic and cover ups... We inspected our beds 30 sec and found hair and several dirty sports. Staff couldn't care less ... They had a staff party soon...Don't go there!!!

We booked 2 nights in late Nov, as part of our 3 wk trip, minuets from port Arthur, our room was a self contained room, upon entering we were met with a beautiful view out through trees and to the mirror flat tree lined bay, walked to the jetty and watched rays swimming in the shallows beautiful and quiet, with only the sounds being that of the thrushes calling to each other, this sound also greeted us each morning, prt Arthur was awesome, weather was perfect, the meals where all nice with the salmon bake being one of the nicest I've ever had, staff all friendly, loved the dining area, would love to be there with the log fire going, and rooms good, tv reception average but this should change when digital takes effect? The only neg, I had was the showers need to be supplied with flannels as we didn't bring any assuming all accommodation would provide these, and draught/ critter seals on the bottom of the entrance door, could nearly drive the car under ours ;-). Other wise the stay will be a very fond memory ...

Stayed at this hotel last week and found it to be okay only. The room was really stuffy and had a stale smell when we opened the door. Stayed in a two bedroom villa and to try and get some airflow wanted to open the kitchen window which would not stay open. Had to put a book under it to keep it open. The buildings are lovely but the rooms really need some modernising. I don't like the note next to the bed asking to not use the pillows that match the doona but to get the ones out of the cupboard. The ones in the cupboard were old and lumpy. Next visit will probably stay elsewhere.

A very interesting building with motel accommodation or self contained units. We stayed in the two bedroom unit/villa - $175 for one nights accommodation, the room was clean and tidy, smallish bathroom with separate toilet which is handy. The unit had nice open kitchen/lounge area with small fridge, toaster, kettle etc

Our first visit to Tasmania. We booked this accommodation without reading any prior reviews.
What a pleasant surprise that the place was so close to the Port Arthur ruins. The room we were assigned looked out over the beautiful lake at the rear. The unit was clean and modern. The staff were extremely polite and helpful. The meal in the restaurant was so large we could not finish them. The atmosphere in the restaurant with the fire going and the friendly staff made our stay extremely enjoyable. Job well done people. Well worth a stay.
