Surely a site with a chequered past but has moved on and now highlights it's position in early Australia's history. The new visitors centre is easy to navigate through and gives a time line of the history. The cafeteria is a little down market though. We booked the buggy tour which would be recommended as there is a lot to see and a lot of walking involved otherwise. Also the boat cruise was interesting, again highlighting the history. The highlight or maybe low light was the solitary confinement building up on the hill which was an early version of sensory avoidance in an effort to change people - it didn't work!

Thank you for visiting the site, Dudley, and taking the time to leave a review.
We offer multiple dining/food options on site, including the Port Cafe with coffee, collect and go and cook to order and the 1830 Bar & Restaurant for a more refined experience, as well as the Museum Cafe on site and food vans during cruise ship visit days.

Kind regards
the Port Arthur team

Thanks for visiting the site and we agree on your recommendation for a hat!
We do allow children on Ghost Tours, however the suitability of them for children generally depends on the age and ‘stage’ of your children. Ghost Tours are popular with older children however if your child is very young, very active or tends to suffer with nightmares, then Ghost Tours may not be suitable.
If your child is disruptive to the tour, your guide will request that you leave the tour.

Kind regards
the Port Arthur team

Cost $40 for 2 day admission, huge group walking tour and ferry trip. Would prefer a cheaper option for just entrance to the historic park without added extras, easy enough to walk around and see the sites yourself. Considering there is minimal historic information provided and random plaques throughout with non relevant information a casual stroll sight seeing would be more than adequate. Would like to see more effort into the historic information and antiques on show in the houses. The feel of the place is very commercialised and touristic and not at all historic or paying respect to the convicts...huge money making business.

Joined the basic admission, it has already included a short 40 mins tour walking the main site and 20 minutes cruise on the sea.
The tour requires many walking, or elderly can choose walk by themselves and there is rider offered to pick up and drop off at different sites. It would be windy or cold as this is a port.
Good to learn Australian history

Everyone traveling to Tasmania should visit Port Arthur historic site. All the gruesome history, the tours, the Ghost tour and surrounding countryside is very pretty. Remarkable cave is a long walk down steps and the nout through the cave to the deserted beach, loved this quiet place.
