“Must see”
Reviewed April 29, 2013

Port Arthur is a must see for anyone visiting the area. The site is expansive and requires a whole day to fully explore and appreciate all it has to offer. The history is fascinating and the guided tours were very informative and interesting.

“Great site, but the "experience" is poor.”
Reviewed April 28, 2013

Don't get me wrong the archaeological site at Port Arthur is amazing, but let's not forget all the people died there. Personally when I visit a site that has seen so much pain, suffering and death, I take quite a reflective outlook. I thought the $35 ticket included too many add-ons I didn't need to have the kind of experience I wanted. I didn't need the guided tour, nor the boat trip nor the 2 day ticket. I would have preferred to pay less and just walked the site on my own.

“Excellent Tour - Great Site.”
Reviewed April 27, 2013

Was a very good tourist site that had plenty of history and was good value for money. Included in the entry price was free walking tours and a free ferry ride around the harbour. The guides were very informative and friendly. Plenty of information boards around the area to tell you about each and every building. Could easily spend the whole day there.

Transportation turns out to be a little piece of heaven in paradise, yesteryears 'Survivor'.
From botanical gardens to mental asylums, prison cells, to islands of the dead. Visiting at least once in a lifetime should be on your agenda.

“What an eye-opener!”
Reviewed April 24, 2013

A trip to Port Arthur was number one on our list of things to do. It was a cold, wet day but that did not spoil or dampen our spirits. The historical site is very well maintained. I see from other comments about packages, prices etc. so I won't double up on that sort of information.
My husband wanted to do the Point Puer tour as his ancestor was sent to that island at the age of 15 for stealing a pair of pants. There is not much there to see but the tour guide certainly did his best to explain the conditions that boys, as young as 9 yrs old, had to endure.
You definitely need a full day as it takes about 1.1/2 hrs to reach Port Arthur from Hobart CBD.
