Now how many people can say that they enjoyed their time in jail?! We had a great day at the Port Arthur Historical Site. Arrive early and plan to stay for the ghost tour in the evening. We purchased the gold pass which included all the little tours, audio guide and meals and felt in the long run that it was a good deal. (The snacks we had were delicious and the evening meal at Felons was good, but we were late for lunch and many of the choices were already gone.) We did the introductory tour and then continued on with our map and audio guide, which provided some good information. The buildings are well maintained and the tour of the Isle of the Dead was interesting. Whether or not you believe, the ghost tour was good entertainment. I suggest staying in the area so that you don't have to worry about driving far in the dark after the day's visit.

Port Arthur was well worth the trip. We did the overview ticket which was just enough information to enable us to walk around the site. It also included a 20 min cruise which was a wonderful interlude on a beautiful day.

This is a great place for any age to visit and learn about Australian convict history. It has a vast array of sites to visit and activities to enjoy. Come prepared for any weather and wear good shoes. Also getting an audio guide is a must to get a detailed story of the place.

Went down for a night just to do the Ghost Tour after not visiting the site for many years.

The Ghost Tour was as good as I remembered, but the deal for the Ghost Tour and Dinner at Felons was to good to pass up.

I suggest this tour to visitors I met in my work and wanted to check out that my recommendation was still valid - it was.

Didn't leave enough time to pick up the Isle of the Dead Tour the next Day - but this gives me a perfect excuse for getting down there again.

Very well maintained historical site. Upon entering, you are given a playing card (out of a 52 card deck). The card represents one of the inmates who served time in the penal colony. This approach provides insight into what life may have been like as a prisoner entering the colony for first time. You have the option to purchase from a variety of tours on the island. We choose the Walking Tour and Harbor Cruise to the Isle of the Dead. Each tour start after different times, so you can pick which one to go first on. We decided to take the ferry to the Isle of the Dead first. The island is where many of the prison staff and their family were buried, alongside inmates. The tour highlights some of the most famous characters of both populations. After Isle of the Dead, we joined the walking tour. After that, we were allowed to roam the site freely visiting the various ruins. Recommend a full day here to take it all in. On your trip, make sure to visit some of the natural wonders of the Tasman Peninsula, including the including The Devils Kitchen, Tasman's Arch, Blow Hole and the Tessellated Pavement.
