Approximately 2000 souls are buried here but only those above convict level have head stones , complete with some spelling mistakes.
I'm glad they have a walkway above the ground as it's not a big space for so many graves.
Why they were all buried on the island instead of the town I don''t know but it must have been a harrowing trip to get them there.
Our guide was well informed and entertaining
well worth a look as an extra part of the Convict history experience

A very sad little place. The final resting place of so many convicts and workers. A lot of unmarked graves. The boat trip to the isle of the dead was good.

I love that history can teach so much about how far we advance. This isle was for the deceased and to keep diseases away from the rest since there was little to no medical care back then. Prisoners carved the tombstones and often misspelled the writing as they were uneducated. There are several theories as to how many were buried, nothing concrete.
