We stayed a couple of nights in early January. Lovely spot, nicely appointed room, but lacked a few thoughtful touches. The room was small for 2 adults and a child. The blinds did not fit the windows properly, so we were kept awake by the light of the illuminated bank sign next door shining in all night. We had to keep the blind on the bathroom window closed all the time, so people queuing at the ATM couldn't see in! Breakfast finished at 9 am, which was a bit early for us, and the maid knocked on the door at 8.30 am to service the room. Breakfast was nice, but not overly generous.

Room Tip: Rooms are better suited to couples

Our policy is that "The customer is always right, even if they are very demanding and expect more for less." However we need to set the record straight with this review.

We've never had any complaints from guests regarding the window treatments in the Deluxe Room, so we conclude this English reviewer is a very light sleeper but we will explore options nonetheless. We are surprised that the reviewer felt a loss of privacy in the ensuite as the room is located on the 2nd floor, so it would be impossible for anyone at the bank ATM next door to see into the bathroom window unless they had a long ladder, or 3 metres tall as the subsequent reviewer who stayed in the same room noted!

This guest heavily negotiated the tariff for this booking for the cheapest and smallest room in the hotel during our high season, for two nights and requested one night without breakfast to reduce his cost yet again. This guest was fussy and difficult when his 3 cooked breakfast meals were delivered, as he then wanted to change his mind about what kind of eggs originally ordered! Our cooked breakfasts consist of fruit juice, cereal, 2 free-range farm eggs, bacon, mushrooms and angel tomatoes and a thick slice of genuine sourdough per customer - most of our guests tell us the breakfast is too big so we are at a loss to understand why this reviewer considers our breakfasts to be "not overly generous"! It is impossible that our cleaners knocked on his door at 8.30am, as they do not start work until 9.30am, with services being done after 10am. They serviced his room at 11.15am and this guest was unnecessarily rude to our cleaners.

To put the review in context, this guest also wrote an unfair review of Casablanca restaurant complaining that the meal took 45 minutes to arrive (not unreasonable in a fine dining restaurant). It is particularly unjust given the Manager told the reviewer when booking to arrive at 7pm to avoid the large group booked in at 7.15pm. This guest ignores the advice and arrived at 7.30pm. He then complains about getting too much service and attention. Seems to us this guest could never be pleased and enjoys whingeing!

Finally, we don't understand the comment that the room lacked thoughtful touches, as the free port flowed freely, and freshly ground coffee and DVDs were extensively and continuously used by this guest and family. Also, our free selection of toiletries including extra toilet paper and tissue box, and tea, coffee and biscuits were all removed on check-out - not a problem by us - but we conclude the reviewer must have very much enjoyed these thoughtful touches! We challenge this guest to find a more reasonable AAA-rated 4 star accommodation anywhere in Tasmania that include the selection of free goodies and service that he enjoyed at The Madsen.

We loved The Madsen: very pleasant owners, great attention to detail, full breakfast included, very clean and comfortable and right in the middle of Penguin. We walked the length of the village and very much enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: We did not have a front room overlooking the water but we could hear the waves on the beach and coul...

Very nice overnight stay in penguin required to full appreciate the awesomeness that is wild cafe. The hotel room was booked at the last minute, walked off the street. Very professional, and thorough check-in. Great little room. Curious to know what the smell was from the pillows - maybe need a refresh or hit with a stronger detergent, that is the only fault I could find. Efficient delicious breakfast in a smart little dining room overlooking the beautiful, brooding bass strait. I highly recommend visiting penguin and staying at this hotel. Strikes me as the best place to stay on this part of the coast....in definitely the prettiest town in the north-west.

My partner and I really enjoyed our stay and our hosts ensured all our needs were looked after. Frankly we didn't know what to expect as friends made the booking but we were very surprised and have no hesitation in recommending the Masden. We stayed in the old bank chambers on the ground floor with a panoramic view across Bass Strait - the fixtures and fittings were very well appointed. Our friends stayed in the penthouse which was stunning and also a great view (perfect for cocktail hour!) Overall its the small things like free freshly ground coffee are the one percenters that matter. Pricey? Maybe so but well worth it!

Room Tip: The Penthouse or bank chambers.

The Madsen is very well located, right across from the beach at Penguin which is midway between Devonport and Burnie. The rooms at the front of the hotel provide a fantastic view. The rooms are very well appointed, and clean and comfortable. Breakfast was high quality. The hosts were a valuable source of information.

If you are looking for a place to stay on the NW Coast (i.e. anywhere between Devonport & Burnie) this is the place to hang your sombrero for a night or two. This is my 3rd stay here - 1st under new owners - it's got even better - the rooms are well furnished - bed linen nice & crisp - A cooked brekkie is part of the deal - E&B done just right. But one suggestion get rid of those awful Kraft jam sachet thingos. I like my marmalade - but that Kraft "stuff" is just bland yellow jelly with one or two tiny specs of orange peel. Go to the local CWA shop for the real deal.

Next time I'm up this way I'll definitely stay 2 nights @ Madsen. Use it as a base - maybe day trips to Cradle Mountain & Leven Gorge, & then up to Stanley & his Nut & Woolnorth & Cable Station ( great lunch spot). And back in cute little Penguin-by-the-Sea you have got Wild Cafe ( still good) and Casablanca - 2 km along Preservation Road towards Burnie at the Surf Club. I have heard Casablanca is fab - must give it a go.

Room Tip: all rooms are good - but the ground floor front is a dooozy

As a rule we do not normally respond to positive reviews as they represent the reviewer's perspective about their stay at The Madsen Boutique Hotel, and we are more than happy for their words "to do the talking"...

However, we are always looking to further enhance our guests' experiences at The Madsen and are quite amenable to suggestions for improvements. In this case we agree with the reviewer's comment about the jam and condiment sachets. We cannot purchase the lovely jams from CWA as suggested for hygiene reasons, but in keeping with our boutique brand we can do better. While we always try to source our products locally (from the only towels manufactured in Australia at nearby Devonport, to the farm fresh eggs sourced in Penguin), we will be phasing out our current stock and replacing these with the Australian-owned Beerenberg Farm Selection of jams from Hahndorf, South Australia.

We thank the reviewer for his good suggestion.

I travelled to Ulverstone for business and stayed in Penguin the weekend preceeding. The hotel is right on the beach and rooms are newly fitted out and very comfortable. There is also a lovely restaurant named Wind within 5 mins walking distance.
