“"THE" place to stay on Tassie's NW Coast”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 6, 2012

If you are looking for a place to stay on the NW Coast (i.e. anywhere between Devonport & Burnie) this is the place to hang your sombrero for a night or two. This is my 3rd stay here - 1st under new owners - it's got even better - the rooms are well furnished - bed linen nice & crisp - A cooked brekkie is part of the deal - E&B done just right. But one suggestion get rid of those awful Kraft jam sachet thingos. I like my marmalade - but that Kraft "stuff" is just bland yellow jelly with one or two tiny specs of orange peel. Go to the local CWA shop for the real deal.

Next time I'm up this way I'll definitely stay 2 nights @ Madsen. Use it as a base - maybe day trips to Cradle Mountain & Leven Gorge, & then up to Stanley & his Nut & Woolnorth & Cable Station ( great lunch spot). And back in cute little Penguin-by-the-Sea you have got Wild Cafe ( still good) and Casablanca - 2 km along Preservation Road towards Burnie at the Surf Club. I have heard Casablanca is fab - must give it a go.

Room Tip: all rooms are good - but the ground floor front is a dooozy

As a rule we do not normally respond to positive reviews as they represent the reviewer's perspective about their stay at The Madsen Boutique Hotel, and we are more than happy for their words "to do the talking"...

However, we are always looking to further enhance our guests' experiences at The Madsen and are quite amenable to suggestions for improvements. In this case we agree with the reviewer's comment about the jam and condiment sachets. We cannot purchase the lovely jams from CWA as suggested for hygiene reasons, but in keeping with our boutique brand we can do better. While we always try to source our products locally (from the only towels manufactured in Australia at nearby Devonport, to the farm fresh eggs sourced in Penguin), we will be phasing out our current stock and replacing these with the Australian-owned Beerenberg Farm Selection of jams from Hahndorf, South Australia.

We thank the reviewer for his good suggestion.

I travelled to Ulverstone for business and stayed in Penguin the weekend preceeding. The hotel is right on the beach and rooms are newly fitted out and very comfortable. There is also a lovely restaurant named Wind within 5 mins walking distance.

A great Burnie Ten option.

Treat yourself to a night at this comfortable and well-appointed boutique hotel (not just a name in this instance). Then head down to Wild cafe - a 2 minute walk uptown. You will have to book well in advance. Stay Saturday night and enjoy a well-cooked breakfast (included) delivered to the room (no extra charge). Take your time and meander along the quiet coast road to Burnie for the biggest fun run on the island - with 4400 other runners. You can bet you have had the best preparation (or at least the most pleasant!).

But ring ahead ... for the second time in our short history in Tasmania an internet booking was lost. We booked 3 months ahead in this case and had the whole weekend planned. We had booked earliest apparently so we stuck to our guns. An ugly start to the negotiations ("go to another B & B down the road") forced a re-think and the owner recovered well, taking responsibility while still accusing the booking site of a mistake. Meanwhile another guest arrives only to be told of the mix-up - at first "you can sort it out between you" which could have been ugly, then "would you mind going to the B & B down the road" - fortunately they were more than willing to change their plans ... phew. How uncomfortable on a scale of 1 to 10? I give it an 8.

Win-Win? Not really ... this left a bad taste and really isn't good enough - Amanda made every effort to backtrack and offered us some cheap bubbly and a 20% discount on our next stay ... with a suggestion that we book directly though them.

I think the mix-up meant that we missed out on a front room with open sea views. We will ask specifically next time...when we ring...which we will. Its a very nice place in a beautiful little seaside village we are hastily falling in love with.

Room Tip: Ask for ocean facing room & ring first

Since taking over The Madsen a year ago the matter of an internet booking lost in the system was more painful for us than it was for this guest. We had just created a new website in July and there was a two-day hiatus between the changeover of websites which unfortunately impacted our emails linked-in for that period. We assiduously checked with all our online booking channels and recovered all bookings save this one, to our detriment. Despite this being an electronic glitch, one booking lost out of 2,000 is still not good enough and this is why we URGE guests to book preferably directly through our website or better still, call us as recommended by this reviewer.

Given that this reviewer had already lost another internet booking earlier, and that we were fully booked, for the first time we were at the receiving end of an ugly threat made to negatively review us on TripAdvisor. He is correct about how we handled the matter when the other guest arrived and we suggested that one of the parties be accommodated at a B&B that we highly recommend to our regulars whenever we are fully booked. We are indebted to the other guests for gracefully accepting to relocate to the B&B and we refunded them the difference in room rates and a 20% discount on their next stay. In terms of uncomfortable on a scale of 1 to 10 we rate this unpleasant experience as a 10.

For the record, the reviewer had booked the Deluxe Room and was accommodated in the Superior Room, both the cheapest rooms with no direct waterfront views. We agree with his assessment that the three waterfront rooms (Penthouse, Beachfront and Waterfront rooms) provide for a special experience.

PROS- stunning room with fantastic view, very comfortable bed and pillows and nice linen, beautiful spa with views to the sea and the tv, large tv with DVD (and good selection of free DVDs) accommodating and friendly staff, pretty good breakfast.
CONS- poor bathroom toilettries, noisy if kids staying (thin walls-was fine the first night as no kids!), French champagne actually sparkling wine, no instructions for setting tv to watch DVDs, no-one available on reception/housekeeping phone when I had to call a few of times-would be good if it was transferred over to a mobile if they're out. And the most astounding of all the cons was paying $250 a night and then being charged $3 for coffee from the in-room coffee machine!! Would've thought a couple of coffees could be included and even think they shouldn't bother with the 'champagne' and include complimentary coffee and decent bathroom products instead.
Enjoyed Penguin very much, especially dinner at Wild cafe. Book well ahead! Superb menu (but don't have the crispy pork belly because the skin is soft not crispy!) Wouldve liked to go to Casablanca as well but booked out. Pub meal delicious too.

There is always room for improvement and we value comments that help us serve our guests better. The issues raised by the reviewer are addressed in order of importance:
1. We have rectified the communication problem when reception is unattended by changing the instructions on the reception signage (and in all rooms) to ensure that if the in-house line dials out then to call the hotel number which is always monitored.
2. We do not understand the comment about poor bathroom toiletries as we use the industry leading Kudos Platinum collection (shampoo, conditioner, soap and shower cap) which is described as "contemporary, modern minimalist". Does the reviewer have a specific gripe about one of these products?
3. The coffee pods for the Nespresso coffee machine are clearly marked for sale, as are all the items in the mini-bar. Using this logic why not complain about the cost of an alcoholic beverage from the mini-bar? However, thanks to the reviewer's comment, we have put in a coffee plunger in the Penthouse as we have already been offering free freshly ground coffee for coffee plungers in all the other rooms.
4. The Penthouse two-night package on our website refers to French bubbly, not champagne. We introduced this practice when taking ownership of the hotel a year ago, replacing the "Minchinbury White" sparkling wine. We are sure most of our guests prefer this change.
5. Finally, we are confident the reviewer will have great difficulty finding a similar 4.5 star AAA Tourism rated two-night package for the same price in a hotel anywhere in Tasmania.

What a find! The stay was brilliant, although only overnight. The room had stunning views and the bed was as comfortable as I have slept in. Breakfast was great also....in fact, I am typing this with a cup of coffee in front of me while looking at the views of the water. A great little boutique place.

The owners of this boutique hotel should be commended for their business acumen and skill at setting up this boutique stay in a remote area of Tasmania. I recently stayed here whilst undertaking business in nearby regions and was very impressed. It is situated in the most beautiful position next to seaside. The owners were more than hospitable, going above and beyond to make my stay pleasant. The rooms are super clean and modern and the breakfast was yummy! I would definitely recommend as a great place to stay.

We stayed one night in the penthouse suite. We wish we were there for longer. The service was amazing. Breakfast was lovely. We were there on a Tuesday night and both good restaurants in the town was closed so we had to go back to Ulverston for dinner, not far but would have rather eaten in the town.
The room and view was fantastic. To wake up to water views from the big window was majic
